The meeting has started, everyone has gathered in the courtyard.
Wang Jiefang had not been home for long when he heard the call for a meeting. He had anticipated this, especially since he saw Yan Bugui's old acquaintance, Yi Zhonghai, arrive at his home just before. It was clear that this meeting would be related to him.
Upon arriving at the courtyard, Wang Jiefang sat with his grandmother and Xu Damao, while Sun Yuwei was pulled aside by Lou Xiao'e to whisper together. Ever since Sun Yuwei married into the family, she and Lou Xiao'e quickly became inseparable friends. Lou Xiao'e no longer visited the deaf old lady, which made the old lady secretly resentful towards Sun Yuwei.
Once everyone had arrived, they ignored Liu Haizhong’s pointless opening remarks. Yi Zhonghai spoke seriously: "The reason for this meeting is that our compound has once again experienced an incident of violence."
"Wang Jiefang, why don't you explain why you injured Shazhu again? Do you realize that your behavior is extremely unacceptable? If you don't have a good reason, don't blame us for taking legal action against you!"
Facing Yi Zhonghai's stern questioning, Wang Jiefang stood his ground: "I say, Old Master Yi, don’t misunderstand my intentions. I was saving Shazhu's life! He should be grateful to me!"
"Stop dodging the issue! I'm talking about your assault on Shazhu! What does saving him have to do with it? Did you really think hitting him was justified?"
"Of course! Old Master Yi, do you know that this rascal Shazhu dared to lay hands on my grandmother? How old is she? Can she withstand a kick from Shazhu?"
"I'll tell you this: if Shazhu kicks her, regardless of whether my grandmother is hurt or not, Shazhu is as good as dead. Do you believe me?" Wang Jiefang's words were filled with conviction.
Shazhu shouted from outside: "What? You blind fool think you can kill me?"
Hearing Shazhu's shout, everyone turned to look at Wang Jiefang. Yi Zhonghai scolded him: "Let me tell you, Wang Jiefang, this is a new country and a new society; killing someone will get you executed!"
Wang Jiefang shrugged nonchalantly: "I know killing is punishable by death, but I haven't killed anyone. Why should I care? Have you forgotten? My grandmother is a war veteran. If she were to be kicked to death or injured by someone, would the military ignore it?"
Shazhu broke out in a cold sweat upon hearing Wang Jiefang's words. How could he forget that this old lady was a war veteran? If he accidentally kicked her to death, even without military intervention, he would still be executed!
Everyone in the courtyard, including Yi Zhonghai, fell silent! By saying this, Wang Jiefang had indeed saved Shazhu’s life; compared to that, Shazhu’s injuries seemed trivial!
Moreover, if an incident occurred in their compound resulting in the death of a war veteran, none of the responsible elders would escape unscathed. Especially Yan Bugui on-site might even end up in jail! Their compound's reputation would be ruined!
Thinking of this, both Yi Zhonghai and Yan Bugui shot a fierce glare at Shazhu! Only Liu Haizhong remained oblivious.
Yi Zhonghai quickly changed the subject: "By the way, Wang Jiefang, I heard you've become the chef at the street office? Congratulations!"
