Upon hearing Wang Jiefang's words, everyone in the courtyard turned their gaze to Yi Zhonghai, especially the young people without jobs, whose eyes sparkled with hope.
"Uncle, you're an eighth-level fitter at the factory. You said that even the factory leaders have to show you respect. Could you help us find a job?"
"Yes, Uncle! Didn't you say we should help each other? This is a big deal; just talk to the leaders at the steel mill and see if they can get us some jobs!"
"Uncle, you're our elder. You wouldn't want to see us unable to find work, would you? Please help us out!"
Yi Zhonghai never expected to be in a situation where he would be morally pressured like this. Not only did he not have any obligation to find jobs for these people, but even if he did, why should he help them? It wouldn't benefit him at all!
It was all Wang Jiefang's fault for putting him in this awkward position!
With a quick thought, he turned to Wang Jiefang and said, "Wang Jiefang, finding a job is indeed your own business. I shouldn't meddle. But look around; there are so many young people here without work!
You managed to find a job yourself and now work at the street office. Why not help them find jobs too?"
As soon as Yi Zhonghai finished speaking, the young people in the courtyard turned their attention back to Wang Jiefang. "That's right, Wang Jiefang! If a blind man like you can find work, surely you can help us too!"
"Yes! You must know the leaders at the street office well; just talk to them and see if they can arrange something for us!"
"Wang Jiefang, we played together when we were kids. You wouldn’t turn your back on us now, would you?"
"Exactly! We’ve grown up together! It’s just a matter of helping us find jobs; you wouldn’t refuse that, right? Don’t be selfish!"
"Wang Jiefang, we’re not asking for much; just get us some office jobs."
Yi Zhonghai watched as the young people surrounded Wang Jiefang, each trying to plead their case. A cold smile crept onto his lips. Hmph! They think they can play me; they’re still too naive!
Wang Jiefang looked at the crowd clamoring for jobs and sneered, "Shut up already!"
Instantly, silence fell over them. Wang Jiefang pointed at them and continued, "Look at all of you with those long faces. What do you mean by expecting a blind man like me to find you jobs? Don’t you feel ashamed saying such things?"
"I'm not your father; why should I find you work? Oh, you can't find jobs? What does that have to do with me?"
"Are you jealous that a blind man like me can find work? Ha! How ridiculous! I have a certified chef's license; do any of you have one? Instead of being envious of my ability to find work, why not focus on learning something new and getting certified—be it as electricians or carpenters? As long as you have qualifications, you'll never be short of job opportunities!"
"Now stop crowding around me and disperse! Honestly, every day it's just useless chatter!"
His last words left the three elders fuming with anger as they glared at him. Wang Jiefang completely ignored them; after all, he couldn't see them anyway. He stood up and pulled his wife and grandmother along as they walked away.
As everyone began to disperse, Yi Zhonghai noticed that whenever it came to Wang Jiefang lately, there was never any agreement reached.
After this encounter, Wang Jiefang felt as if his family had been isolated by everyone in the courtyard. Whenever his family appeared, conversations would abruptly stop and people would turn away and leave!
