That evening, after dinner, Wang received a notification to attend a meeting at the Central Courtyard. Not long after arriving, the meeting commenced. Liu Haizhong stood up, his face glowing with pride, and announced loudly, "Dear neighbors, I called this meeting today primarily to share some good news!
As you all know, my son Liu Guangqi graduated from vocational school and immediately started working. He has been recognized for his excellence, and his supervisor has decided to marry his daughter to my son Liu Guangqi! They have already decided to officially register their marriage the day after tomorrow!
I want to say that on the day Guangqi registers his marriage, which is Sunday, I plan to host a banquet and invite everyone! You are all welcome to come and celebrate with us!"
Upon hearing about the banquet, everyone began to applaud. Liu Haizhong looked proudly at himself and Yan Jiefang, while Wang Jiefang felt speechless. "What’s with that look, Old Liu? Are you implying something? Do you think that just because you’re hosting a banquet for your son’s wedding, it makes you superior to us who didn’t have one?"
To be fair, Wang Jiefang's guess was spot on; Liu Haizhong indeed thought that way.
After Liu Haizhong finished discussing the wedding, he dismissed the meeting and approached Shazhu. "Shazhu, we still haven’t found a chef for Guangqi’s wedding day. Can you help me out? After all, you’re in this line of work and know many people! Don’t get me wrong; if it weren’t for your leg injury, I would have definitely entrusted Guangqi’s wedding feast to you!"
Shazhu listened to Liu Haizhong's words and asked, "Isn’t there another chef in our courtyard? Why don’t you ask him?"
"Other chefs? Are you talking about that blind man from the Wang family? How could I possibly hire a blind man for my son’s wedding feast? That would be bad luck! Besides, I don’t believe he can cook well!"
Liu Haizhong clearly looked down on Wang Jiefang, which pleased Shazhu. He patted his chest and assured Liu Haizhong, "You’re right; that blind man is just coasting along! I’ll introduce my senior brother to you; he used to be the head chef at Fengze Garden!"
"Great! Thank you, Shazhu!"
Soon enough, word spread around the courtyard that Wang Jiefang from the street office was just coasting along in the kitchen. The old man in the courtyard would rather hire an outside chef for the wedding banquet than let Wang Jiefang handle it!
Wang Jiefang simply smiled at this gossip and didn’t pay it any mind.
On Sunday morning, not long after breakfast, a car arrived at the entrance of the courtyard. San Dajie quickly approached as he saw it coming. "Comrade, I’m San Dajie, the caretaker of this courtyard. What brings you here?"
The driver got out and asked, "San Dajie? I’m here to pick up Master Wang Jiefang! Is he in this courtyard?"
"Wang Jiefang? May I ask why you’re here to pick him up?" Yan Bugui asked in surprise.
The driver frowned slightly upon hearing Yan Bugui refer to Wang Jiefang as 'the blind man,' but he recalled that his superiors had indeed mentioned picking up someone with vision problems.
Wang Jiefang approached with Sun Yuwei upon hearing the commotion. The driver saw a blind man coming over and guessed that this must be the person he was there to pick up.
"Are you Master Wang?" the driver politely inquired.
"That’s me. Zhao Lingdao sent you here, right?"
"Yes, it's our leader who sent me to pick you up. Are you ready to go?"
"Sure, let's go!" Wang Jiefang said as he got into the car.
