Wang Jiefang concealed himself in the shadow of a corner, intending to eavesdrop on what these people were discussing. Perhaps he had arrived a bit late, as the group dispersed after only exchanging a few words.
Watching the five individuals depart in different directions, Wang Jiefang felt a bit perplexed. Which one should he follow? Moreover, he had just arrived and couldn't discern who was the leader among them.
With no other choice, he decided to take a gamble and follow the person who spoke in a foreign language. Wang Jiefang possessed mental acuity, allowing him to lock onto this individual from four hundred meters away. The person was cautious, frequently glancing back or retracing their steps.
As they navigated through various alleys, Wang Jiefang realized that if it weren't for his unique abilities, anyone else trying to track this person would have surely been exposed. From his mental perspective, he observed that this individual circled through several alleys, and he noticed that three of those places had someone keeping a close watch behind them, clearly checking for any potential followers.
The more cautious this person became, the more Wang Jiefang felt that he might be onto something significant. Eventually, after several tests of patience, the individual entered a large courtyard. To Wang Jiefang's surprise, he recognized this courtyard as it was not far from his own residence; it was astonishing that someone who appeared to be an enemy agent was right under his nose.
Once he confirmed which room the person had entered, he turned and left. Not far along his path, he encountered his wife.
Seeing Wang Jiefang, Sun Yuwei let out a sigh of relief. She approached him with concern and asked why he had returned so late. "Grandma has been worried about you and sent me to look for you!"
Wang Jiefang smiled and replied that he had been busy preparing a complicated meal, which delayed him. "Don't worry; it's been so long now; you know me well enough by now! I’m fine." He refrained from mentioning that he had been tracking an enemy agent, fearing it would only worry his wife and grandmother more.
Once they returned home, Grandma finally relaxed. She looked at Wang Jiefang and said, "Jiefang, next time you host a meal, bring Yuwei along. I really can’t bear to let you go out alone!"
Even though she understood Wang Jiefang's capabilities, Grandma still worried about him. He knew her concern stemmed from her deep affection for him.
To ease her worries, Wang Jiefang reluctantly agreed to her suggestion. Sun Yuwei also wanted to accompany her husband but expressed her own concerns to Grandma. "If I go out with him and leave you alone at home, I won’t feel at ease either."
Grandma no longer engaged in making matchboxes; that work was meant for those struggling with life who lacked labor skills. Now that Wang Jiefang had secured a job and earned some extra money on the side, she no longer fit the criteria for hardship.
"Don't be silly! I'm just an old woman at home; what do you have to worry about? Besides, if I get bored, I can always have Little Goose come over for some company! Just go ahead and accompany Jiefang!" Grandma reassured Sun Yuwei.
"Alright Grandma, I'll listen to you," Sun Yuwei conceded after considering Grandma's words. She agreed mainly because she was still somewhat concerned about Wang Jiefang—after all, he was visually impaired.
Ever since Wang Jiefang learned that someone had reported him, he had been releasing his mental energy daily around their home. The entire courtyard was enveloped in his mental presence; although he hadn’t identified who reported him yet, he had managed to uncover the secrets of each household.
In the novels he read before crossing over, there were mentions of a deaf old lady being an enemy agent; others described her as a princess from the Qing Dynasty or even as a concubine of some lord. Now that he found himself in this courtyard, his curiosity about the deaf old lady grew stronger; thus, he decided to investigate her household more closely.
