Wang Jiefang thought it was all over, but two days later, he and his wife had just arrived at the courtyard when Director Wang called for him.
Seeing the dark expression on Director Wang's face, Wang Jiefang cautiously asked what was wrong.
Director Wang sighed and said, "I won't hide it from you. You and your wife have been reported! Your aunt just finished explaining things to the leadership."
Wang Jiefang quickly put two and two together and tentatively asked if it was because of his wife’s actions.
Director Wang let out a bitter laugh. "Not exactly! That big courtyard of yours really leaves me speechless. A while ago, someone reported that you were loafing around at the street office, and I suspect it was someone from your courtyard!"
Wang Jiefang replied confidently, "Don’t even guess; it must have been them!"
"Fortunately, your wife's actions did earn you some recognition from above. I clarified things with the leadership, so it should be fine now!"
"I called you here for another reason. I've received a notice from the Chef Association that you need to retake your chef certification this week!"
"I found out that someone reported you to the Chef Association, claiming that your eyesight is poor and that you are unfit to be a chef anymore! They said you were just coasting on the certification you obtained before!"
"What do you think about this? I know your culinary skills!"
Wang Jiefang felt quite speechless at the thought of someone using this against him. He told Director Wang, "If they want me to retake the exam, then so be it! With my skills, I’m not worried about this at all. Who knows, maybe I can even get a first-class chef certification this time!"
Director Wang laughed heartily. "I believe in your culinary skills! If you manage to get a first-class certification, our little street office won’t be able to contain you!"
Wang Jiefang chuckled back, "Don’t say I’ll get a first-class certification; even if I get a special-class one, I’m still part of the street office under your command, Director Wang!"
Wang Jiefang truly had no intention of leaving the street office; it was a good place to work—easygoing tasks and close to home!
"You better work hard then! I’m counting on you as our first-class chef to bring glory to our street office!" Director Wang teased with a smile.
Then Director Wang furrowed his brow and asked, "Can you guess who reported you?"
Wang Jiefang replied casually, "Who else could it be? I suspect it’s Shazhu. After all, ordinary people wouldn’t think to report someone to the Chef Association unless they were in the same line of work!"
Director Wang found some logic in what Wang Jiefang said, but neither of them had any evidence to continue the discussion further.
In any case, Wang Jiefang was convinced that Shazhu was behind the report. He wouldn’t go as far as eliminating someone just because he suspected them of reporting him; even though he had the ability to make someone disappear without a trace, doing so would only change his mindset for the worse!
This was also why people from the courtyard kept provoking him while he merely imposed light punishments. It wasn’t like they were in an apocalyptic world; he was dealing with ordinary people who had their own private lives—not those zombies who were life-and-death enemies. There was no need for him to go to such extremes!
If he secretly took action against someone over neighborhood disputes, what would that make him? A monster?
That evening after work, as soon as Wang Jiefang and Sun Yuwei arrived at the courtyard, they were blocked by Shazhu! Without waiting for Wang Jiefang to speak, Shazhu began boasting: "Wang Blind Man, didn’t you just have a good master who helped you pass the Level 5 chef exam? Now that your eyesight is gone, I don’t believe you still have Level 5 chef skills!"
