The day after Bang Geng was dismissed, Wang Jiefang and his wife were at the street office when they heard the news: the deaf old lady in their backyard had finally passed away.
When they finished work and returned to the courtyard, white banners had already been hung up. Regardless of the circumstances, one must respect the deceased. Wang Jiefang led his wife to pay their respects in front of the old lady's coffin.
Wang Jiefang noticed that Yi Zhonghai and that old rascal, along with Shazhu, all looked grim. In particular, Shazhu's gaze towards Yi Zhonghai was tinged with a hint of resentment, as if he felt that Yi Zhonghai had intercepted something that belonged to him. Could it be that Shazhu knew Yi Zhonghai had taken the living expenses that He Daqing sent him? But judging by his demeanor, it didn’t seem like it; otherwise, with Shazhu's temperament, he would have caused a scene.
But then again, if Shazhu didn’t know about his father sending living expenses, what was with Yi Zhonghai’s expression? He looked as if he had lost something worth millions!
Wang Jiefang guessed correctly; there was indeed someone who had a stake in this—Yi Zhonghai! Who else could it be but the deaf old lady?
Yi Zhonghai had been so devoted to serving the old lady not just out of kindness but for the gold she possessed. Knowing her time was short, the old lady indulged her appetites and spent a lot of Yi Zhonghai’s money. Yet every time Yi Zhonghai brought up the gold, she would feign deafness!
Yi Zhonghai thought that the old lady was afraid of giving him the gold and then being betrayed by him, which is why she wouldn’t tell him where it was. To ensure he got his hands on the gold, he took even greater care of her!
Unexpectedly, the old lady suddenly passed away. In her final moments of clarity, no matter how Yi Zhonghai asked about the gold’s whereabouts, she wouldn’t say a word! The old lady wanted to speak but didn’t even know who had stolen the gold! All she kept shouting was to see Shazhu!
With no other choice, Yi Zhonghai called for Shazhu to come over. He feared that if the old lady revealed any information about the gold to Shazhu, he would be left out of it entirely. So he stayed close to Shazhu. However, as soon as the old lady saw Shazhu, she didn’t even have time to speak before she passed away!
Now Yi Zhonghai was left dumbfounded; where was the gold? He wasn’t ready to give up and searched through the old lady’s room thoroughly. He even knocked on every single tile on the floor!
Unfortunately for him, the box containing the gold was buried half a meter under a tile that he never discovered. However, he and Shazhu did find a box containing identification documents that were of no use to either of them and could even be harmful since they had both become sworn relatives of the old lady!
In frustration, Yi Zhonghai burned those documents! The old lady had mentioned to Shazhu in passing that she would give him her gold once she was gone. Now that she had passed away, he hadn’t seen a single piece!
He recalled that recently it had been Yi Dama who took care of the old lady, and she was also one of the last people to see her alive. It must have been Yi Dama who learned about the gold’s whereabouts and deliberately delayed coming over herself! She must have feared that the old lady would reveal its location to him!
Yi Zhonghai searching for gold in the old lady's room was clearly a show for himself! Thinking about how he was now so poor he could barely afford food while Yi Zhonghai swallowed up all of the old lady's gold made him wonder how anyone could have good feelings towards Yi Zhonghai!
Not only did Shazhu suspect that Yi Zhonghai had taken the old lady's gold, but Yi Zhonghai also suspected that during their private moments together, the old lady might have revealed its location to Shazhu! Thus, he kept a close watch on him without revealing his thoughts.
