"Hey, Wang Jiefang, why are you setting up a tent so early in the morning?"
After finishing breakfast, Yan Bugui noticed Wang Jiefang's actions and asked.
"Teacher Yan, I can't help it. This house where my grandmother and I live hasn't been repaired in over ten years. You wouldn't believe it; a couple of days ago, it rained heavily outside, and we had a little rain inside too. If we hadn't used buckets to catch it, our place would have been flooded by now! So I figured I'd take advantage of today to fix up the house properly."
As long as the people in the courtyard didn't cause any trouble, Wang Jiefang was willing to talk to them nicely.
Yan Bugui looked at the tiles on Wang Jiefang's roof and nodded. "Yeah, you definitely have quite a few broken tiles. It's good that you're replacing them!"
"By the way, your brother Yan and Jie Cheng and Jie Kuang are off today too. Why not let them come over and help? You just need to give them eighty cents each."
Yan Bugui was quite adept at finding opportunities. However, Wang Jiefang agreed with his idea of having his son earn some money through labor.
"Sure, Uncle Yan. I can have the Yan brothers come over to help carry things or transport some sand and stones. How about I pay each of them one yuan for the day?"
Yan Bugui didn't expect Wang Jiefang to agree so readily. "Really? One yuan for each of them? That's great! Don't worry about it; I'll keep an eye on them. If they don't work hard, I'll personally give them a good talking-to!"
"Hey, Eldest Brother, Jie Cheng, Jie Kuang! What are you doing in there? Come out and get to work!"
Wang Jiefang and Yan Bugui's conversation was clearly heard inside the house. When Yan Jie Cheng and Yan Jie Kuang heard their father calling, they rushed out.
"Dad, Brother Wang, are you really giving us one yuan for the day?"
Yan Bugui slapped Yan Jie Cheng on the back of his head. "Can your Brother Wang lie to you? But remember, this job is arranged by me, so you need to give me a portion of that money!"
Yan Jie Kuang looked at his father in shock. "Dad, that's a bit unfair, isn't it? We work hard just to earn one yuan! You don’t do anything but still want a cut—it's like you're being greedy!"
"You little brat! How dare you call me greedy? Don't forget that I'm the one who found this job for you! You must give me half of what you earn!"
Yan Jie Cheng understood his father's ways; they would definitely have to give him part of their earnings. However, giving half was out of the question!
"Dad, we'll only give you thirty cents each. If you agree to that, we'll do the work; if not, we'll just go back to sleep!"
Hearing this from Yan Jie Cheng made Yan Bugui want to negotiate further. "Thirty cents is too little! How about this: I'll make a concession; each of you gives me forty cents!"
Yan Jie Cheng directly pulled Yan Jie Kuang back toward their room. "Brother, let's just go back and continue sleeping. We barely had anything for breakfast; if we start working now, we'll be hungry again soon!"
Seeing the two brothers turn around to leave, Yan Bugui quickly called out to them. "Fine! I owe you guys this one; thirty cents it is!"
As soon as he agreed, Yan Jie Kuang and Yan Jie Cheng ran back excitedly. "Brother Wang! Hehe, we're here to help you set up the tent! Just tell us how to do it!"
Seeing how eager these two brothers were to help, Wang Jiefang decided to take charge and guide them through the process.
At that moment, Yan Bugui realized that Yan Jiefang hadn't come out yet. He shouted into the house again: "Eldest Brother! What are you doing in there? Hurry up and come out to work!"
Yu Li looked at Yan Jiefang, who lay still on the bed. She gave him a gentle nudge and said, "Yan Jiefang, Dad is calling for you!"
