As winter descended upon Kyoto, Wang Jiefang felt the chill of the original memories. With foresight, he had prepared a heated kang for himself and his grandmother. As the year drew to a close, factories began their holidays, but the street office found itself busier than ever. With workers and children returning home for the break, there were more matters for the office to handle, leaving no room for them to take time off.
Wang Jiefang never expected that he, a mere cook, would be the busiest person in the entire street office! Everyone knew that year-end was when leaders at all levels made the most effort to connect with people, and the best way to do that was through banquets. Naturally, the first choice for such gatherings was renowned restaurants. However, given the current climate, if leaders were seen dining out at restaurants, it could easily become a topic of scrutiny.
This was where Wang Jiefang's reputation came into play. Instead of dining at a restaurant, he suggested inviting cooks from subordinate or friendly units to prepare meals at home. Of course, it was only right to offer some compensation for their help.
Just as Wang Jiefang was about to start cooking, he and Sun Yuwei were called away again. The street office staff had grown accustomed to this; after all, calls from leaders were hard to ignore. Not only did they have to comply, but they also needed to remind Wang Jiefang to ensure everything was done beautifully.
After months of training, the kitchen staff could now handle cooking on their own. The kitchen could operate smoothly even without Wang Jiefang's presence.
"Master Wang," said a voice from behind him, "I need you to prepare a meal for two esteemed leaders. Just four dishes and a soup will suffice."
This time, it was Director Song from the Municipal Public Security Bureau who had come over. As soon as he arrived at Wang Jiefang's home, he greeted him warmly before getting straight to the point.
"Don't worry, Director Song," Wang Jiefang replied confidently. "This is what I do; there's no trouble at all!"
"Could you let me know if your guests have any dietary restrictions or preferred dishes?" Wang Jiefang asked directly; this wasn't his first time cooking for Director Song.
After pondering for a moment, Director Song replied, "No restrictions. As for preferences? I trust that with your skills, they'll enjoy whatever you prepare. Just use what's available in the kitchen."
"Alright then, I'll head to the kitchen now," Wang Jiefang said.
He took a quick look around and noticed a sizable carp—probably weighing close to a kilogram—an impressive find indeed! It seemed that Director Song's guests were quite important.
"This fish can be made spicy," he thought. "And I can use the bones to make a broth!"
Looking around further, he spotted over two pounds of pork—perfect for braised pork! With two meat dishes already planned, he saw potatoes and tofu nearby and decided on making spicy shredded potatoes and Mapo tofu to complete the meal.
While Wang Jiefang busied himself in the kitchen, Director Song's guests arrived. Their loud voices echoed through the house; even Sun Yuwei in the kitchen could hear them clearly.
"Old Song," she called out after finishing up in the kitchen, "the dishes are ready! You all can eat while chatting!"
With that invitation, she stepped back as the lively conversation filled the air around them.
Director Song replied with a simple acknowledgment and then turned to the two people sitting across from him. "Old Commander, the dishes are ready. Let's head to the restaurant!"
"I want to see what you, Director Song, have prepared to treat me!" Old Commander said with a smile.
