However, Yan Bugui had always been perceptive. Hearing Xu Damao's words, he feigned excitement and said: "Congratulations, Damao! You're the first one in our courtyard to become an official! I always knew you would achieve something great; look at you now!"
Xu Damao felt a bit elated by Yan Bugui's flattery: "Oh please, it's just a small deputy position. It's nothing. Just wait until I become a section chief or department head; then it will be something!"
"Of course! With your abilities, becoming a section chief or department head is just a matter of time!"
Yan Bugui continued to flatter Xu Damao. Wang Jiefang inside the house could hear it and felt a bit nauseated; Sun Yuwei rolled her eyes at the exchange!
Wang Jiefang knew that Yan Bugui's flattery was not just for show; given his opportunistic nature, he surely had ulterior motives.
Sure enough, soon after he heard Yan Bugui ingratiatingly say: "Damao, since you're the most successful one in our courtyard and the first official among us, why don't you host a few tables for everyone to celebrate your promotion? It would be nice for us all to share in your glory!"
The mention of hosting made Xu Damao instantly sober up. He looked at Yan Bugui suspiciously: "I say, Yan Laokou, are you trying to make me treat everyone? Isn't that just setting me up? You can't possibly want me to spend my money!"
Yan Bugui felt a chill run down his spine under Xu Damao's scrutinizing gaze. He didn't want to offend him because Xu Damao was known for being petty; if he crossed him, Xu Damao would find ways to retaliate. Now that Xu Damao had become an official, if there were any misunderstandings between them, Yan Bugui certainly couldn't handle the consequences!
