"Grandma, it's me! Si Geng!"
At that moment, the young man who had been captured finally spoke up. When Jia Zhang heard someone claim to be Si Geng, she was momentarily stunned before grabbing the young man and examining his face closely.
She noticed that although this young man was much thinner than her Si Geng, the contours of his face were unmistakably those of her beloved grandson!
"Oh my, Si Geng, my dear grandson! You finally made it back; I’ve missed you so much!"
Once she confirmed it was indeed Si Geng, Jia Zhang pulled him into a tight embrace and began to cry out loud. Qin Huairu, standing nearby, was also overwhelmed with joy and wiped away her tears.
Yan Bugui watched the scene unfold with increasing awkwardness. He shouted to the crowd around him, "Everyone, look! It's Si Geng! I didn't recognize him at first because he has changed so much. When I called out to him, he didn’t even respond!"
However, the crowd showed no intention of leaving; they were all curious about Si Geng and wanted to know how he had fared during his time in the juvenile detention center.
After hesitating for a moment in the crowd, Yi Zhonghai finally approached. "Si Geng, now that you're back, make sure to live well in the courtyard. Don’t cause any more trouble that would worry your mother!"
Hearing Yi Zhonghai's words, Jia Zhang stopped crying. She pointed an accusing finger at him and shouted, "Yi Zhonghai, you bastard! Who do you think you are to lecture my grandson? If it weren't for you calling the police, my Si Geng wouldn't have been caught! Get away from here!"
Si Geng shot Yi Zhonghai a fierce glare. The intensity of his gaze made Yi Zhonghai's heart sink; it seemed that Si Geng now harbored resentment towards him. It was clear that his hopes of having Si Geng support him in old age were dashed.
With a sigh of resignation, he turned and left for his own home.
"Qin Huairu! Didn’t you see your son is back? Why are you just standing there in a daze? Hurry up and buy some meat to make for my dear grandson!" Jia Zhang called out to Qin Huairu.
"Grandma, I don’t have any tickets or money! Where am I supposed to get meat?" Qin Huairu replied defensively.
"I don’t care! You’re his mother; you need to get meat for my dear grandson! He has suffered inside these past few days! You must make it up to him!"
Faced with Jia Zhang's unreasonable demands, Qin Huairu felt helpless. She suppressed her urge to embrace her son and turned to leave the house.
Who in the courtyard would still give them meat? She stared blankly at Shazhu's house for a moment; if only Shazhu were still around, he would surely find a way to get some meat for her!
Ultimately, Qin Huairu had no choice but to go to Yi Zhonghai's house. "Uncle Yi, can I borrow some money and tickets from you? Si Geng is back today, and I want to get him some meat."
Qin Huairu had quite a thick skin; her mother-in-law had just scolded Yi Zhonghai, and now she was asking him for meat tickets and money!
Yi Zhonghai recalled Si Geng’s dark expression and was reluctant to engage with Qin Huairu. Seeing that he was ignoring her made Qin Huairu realize he wasn’t willing to lend anything.
Tears streamed down her face as she pleaded, "Uncle Yi, I really have no other options. I know my mother-in-law just scolded you; that was wrong of her. But as a daughter-in-law, I can’t control what she says!
It’s all my fault as a widow; my son has suffered inside for days. Now that he’s finally back and wants some meat, I can’t even provide that!"
Yi Dama looked coldly at Qin Huairu as she put on this act. However, Yi Zhonghai's heart softened at the sight of her pitiful demeanor. After all, he still hoped for Qin Huairu to provide for his son. "Fine then," he thought. "If she’s asking for meat tickets and money, I might as well give them to her."
