"Qin Huairu, stop saying all this nonsense. I don't care where Bang Geng learned to be bad; the fact is, he came into my house today, hit me, and stole my money! I have to call the police!"
No matter how pitiful Qin Huairu tried to appear, Yi Zhonghai was determined to report Bang Geng.
With no other options, Qin Huairu turned to Aunt Yi and said, "Aunt Yi, could you step outside for a moment? I want to discuss something privately with Uncle Yi."
Aunt Yi glanced at Yi Zhonghai, and upon his nod, she stepped outside.
Once Aunt Yi was gone, Qin Huairu said to Yi Zhonghai, "Uncle Yi, I know you're worried about your retirement. If you let Bang Geng go today, I promise that when you grow old, I will take care of you."
Upon hearing Qin Huairu's words, Yi Zhonghai's eyes lit up. He had indeed hoped for Qin Huairu to care for him in his later years but had never voiced it. Now that she brought it up herself, he felt it was worth considering.
Earlier, he had been so angry that he kept shouting about calling the police to catch Bang Geng. But now he thought about it: if he really sent Bang Geng away and something terrible happened to him—like being executed—wouldn't Qin Huairu go mad with revenge?
He didn't believe that after all those times they had been in the cellar together, Qin Huairu wouldn't have some leverage over him.
Now that Qin Huairu had offered to take care of him in his old age, he decided to agree: "Fine, since you're so sincere, I'll let Bang Geng go. But you better keep an eye on him. If he comes back to my house to hit me and steal again, don't blame me!"
Seeing that Yi Zhonghai agreed, Qin Huairu felt relieved. "Thank you, Uncle Yi. Don't worry; I will definitely teach Bang Geng a lesson and won't let him do this again!"
That day, Bang Geng was out drinking with his friends and got completely drunk. With their flattery boosting his ego, he felt on top of the world!
In his reckless spending spree, the little money he had stolen was quickly gone. By then, Yi Zhonghai had already returned home to recuperate.
Lying in bed, he couldn't stop Bang Geng from coming over to take money! Every time Yi Zhonghai tried to call the police, Qin Huairu would stop him.
After several such incidents, Yi Zhonghai finally couldn't take it anymore. Once he recovered from his injuries, the first thing he did was sneak over to the street office!
As soon as Yi Zhonghai entered the street office, Wang Jiefang noticed him. Out of curiosity, he followed along to see what Yi Zhonghai was up to.
Yi Zhonghai went straight to Director Zheng's office. Upon seeing him, Director Zheng frowned. She didn't have a good impression of Yi Zhonghai; the previous director had nearly jeopardized her promotion because of his foolish antics. Now that Yi Zhonghai was here looking for her, it probably wasn't good news.
"Yi Zhonghai? You came to the street office looking for me? Is there something you need?"
Since Yi Zhonghai was already there, Director Zheng asked him out of routine.
"Well, Director Zheng," Yi Zhonghai replied politely, "I wanted to inquire about sending young people down to the countryside."
Hearing that Yi Zhonghai was asking about sending youth down to the countryside surprised Director Zheng. She looked at him curiously and asked, "Yi Zhonghai, why are you asking about this? As far as I know, you don't have any children?"
Yi Zhonghai felt a chill at her words about not having children! However, he didn't dare show any displeasure towards Director Zheng; he could only force a smile and say, "Director Zheng, it's like this: our courtyard's Jia Geng was sentenced to two years in a juvenile detention center! Recently he has been released."
"But I've noticed that after being disciplined there, it seems like he's gotten worse. Now he's running around with a group of delinquents on the streets. Over time I'm really worried he'll get into trouble again; if that happens, wouldn't it ruin a good kid?"
