Director Zheng felt a fire burning inside him with nowhere to vent. Nearly all the residents of the courtyard he managed had been detained for fifteen days, and he was summoned to the leadership office for an hour-long reprimand!
But that wasn’t the end of it. Due to the numerous incidents that occurred during his tenure as the street office director, his superiors decided to retire him immediately. When Zheng heard the news of his retirement, his first reaction was surprisingly one of relief! Perhaps he had been prepared for this outcome all along.
Retirement wasn’t such a bad thing; the people in this courtyard were simply too troublesome. If he continued to dwell on it, he might not even receive his retirement benefits! After the incident involving Yi Zhonghai being beaten, he felt even more fortunate about retiring. The only reason he came to intervene was that his retirement paperwork hadn’t been completed yet; he was still technically the street office director, and when something happened in the courtyard, he had no choice but to show up!
However, once his paperwork was finalized in a few days, he would leave the subsequent issues of the courtyard for his successor to deal with. The next street office director might very well thank him profusely for this.
When Yi Zhonghai was sent to the hospital for examination, it turned out he had over twenty fractures all over his body! What kind of grudge could lead to such brutality?
After emergency treatment, Yi Zhonghai survived, but the pain coursing through him made him wish for death instead. Wrapped up like a mummy, the first thing Yi Zhonghai did upon waking was ask the hospital to report to the police: “Doctor, I’ve been beaten! Please report it for me!”
The doctor examined Yi Zhonghai’s body and replied calmly, “Don’t worry; our hospital has already reported it. The police came while you were still unconscious, and they are likely to return shortly.”
“Thank you, doctor,” Yi Zhonghai murmured. Upon hearing that the doctor had already reported it, he closed his eyes again; the pain was simply too much. With so many fractures, the doctor had restrained him with straps to prevent any further injuries from movement.
This made Yi Zhonghai feel extremely uncomfortable! He had no mood to continue talking.
Just then, police officers from the local precinct arrived! After learning from the doctor that Yi Zhonghai had regained consciousness, they approached his bedside: “Yi Zhonghai, we are from the precinct. We have investigated your beating while you were unconscious.”
“We have apprehended those who attacked you. They are willing to compensate you for your medical and living expenses and hope you can forgive them. What do you think?”
The suffering Yi Zhonghai endured was all due to those people from the courtyard; given his vengeful nature, how could he possibly forgive them? Gritting his teeth, he replied to the police: “Officer, I don’t need their compensation. I want those who beat me to go to jail!”
The police recorded Yi Zhonghai’s decision and left.
The courtyard was thrown into chaos as over twenty men were arrested; the remaining women panicked. These men were the pillars of their families; they couldn’t afford for anything to happen to them! Now that they heard Yi Zhonghai refused money or reconciliation, they rushed to find him at the hospital.
“Yi Zhonghai, we’re all from the same courtyard! Can’t you bear to see them go to jail? That’s twenty-five people! More than half of our men have been arrested; if something happens to them, how will we manage?”
“Exactly! Yi Zhonghai, don’t you always say that one shouldn’t be too selfish? You were just beaten up! Besides, you brought this on yourself! Can’t you be magnanimous and let our men go?”
“Yeah, Yi Zhonghai, putting aside facts for a moment—don’t you think you’re in the wrong here?”
