Yan Bugui was a man whose fate seemed to oscillate between fortune and misfortune. During his detention, he had anticipated the cancellation of his pension, and given his nature of never taking advantage of others, the thought of losing his retirement funds weighed heavily on him. Within days, he fell into a deep depression that nearly cost him his life.
When the staff at the detention center learned of his illness, he was barely clinging to life. Fortunately, they sent him to a hospital where he encountered a skilled physician who managed to save him.
Although Yan Bugui survived, the issue of his pension continued to haunt him, leaving him in a daze. This preoccupation prevented him from participating in the confrontation with Yi Zhonghai. Otherwise, he would have certainly taken out his frustrations on Yi Zhonghai.
Upon his discharge from the hospital, he learned that Yi Zhonghai had been severely beaten. Before he could feel any joy over this news, he was struck with another blow: his eldest son, Yan Jiefang, had been arrested for participating in the assault on Yi Zhonghai.
Hearing this news nearly caused Yan Bugui to faint again due to his already weakened state. As for what happened next with Wang Jiefang, Yan Bugui was unaware; by then, he had moved away.
Wang Jiefang's new home was a sprawling estate that once belonged to a noble family during the Qing Dynasty, covering twenty acres. It was indeed fortunate for him to have acquired such a property! The courtyard consisted of five sections, but details of its layout are unnecessary here. After purchasing it, he hired a construction team to renovate the house, making it just as livable as it would be decades later.
He also brought his master’s wife and mother-in-law to live with him since there was ample space in the house. Additionally, he hired a nanny and a chef to take care of both women.
Wang Jiefang’s master now spent his days either strolling around with a birdcage or playing chess with retired men from the neighborhood. When he wasn’t busy with those activities, he enjoyed entertaining Wang Jiefang’s children. Their lives were quite comfortable; if Yi Zhonghai were to find out about their happiness, he would surely be consumed by jealousy!
Wang Jiefang learned about the events surrounding the courtyard six months later when it made headlines in legal news. After spending a month in the hospital, Yi Zhonghai's condition stabilized enough for him to be discharged. His injuries were severe enough that self-care was impossible. Fortunately, in this new era, Yi Zhonghai had saved up quite a bit of money and hired a nanny to assist him.
Yi Zhonghai took great care of himself; almost every few days, he would have the nanny prepare chicken soup for him! The residents of the courtyard couldn’t help but feel envious seeing how well Yi Zhonghai lived. Moreover, because of him, they had spent half a year in jail and lost their jobs!
Thankfully, they had purchased their home; otherwise, they would have faced eviction like those who hadn’t bought property! Especially Yan Bugui—still trapped in the shadow of losing his pension—could hardly bear seeing Yi Zhonghai living so well. He even attempted to pressure Yi Zhonghai for compensation.
Naturally, Yi Zhonghai refused to give Yan Bugui any compensation! For an entire week, Yan Bugui clung stubbornly to Yi Zhonghai’s home demanding reparations, but Yi Zhonghai remained resolute.
It is often said that educated people can be particularly ruthless; seeing that Yi Zhonghai wouldn’t agree to compensate him while enjoying fine meals only made Yan Bugui more distressed. He feared that if Yi Zhonghai spent all his money on lavish living, there would be nothing left for compensation!
In an audacious move, he rallied those who had been imprisoned for beating Yi Zhonghai and conspired to drive away Yi Zhonghai’s nanny! When she saw the unfriendly gazes from those in the courtyard, she was too frightened to return.
Now without a nanny to care for him and unable to move on his own, Yi Zhonghai found himself under constant watch by several groups formed by Yan Bugui and his allies!
