Ruan Anmu's brows furrowed deeper as she listened.
"Excuse me, Miss Yu, what do you mean when you say Xiaoxi has a bad temper, that she dislikes me, and that I should take care of my own property? What exactly are you trying to imply?"
Ruan Anmu was not foolish; she saw through Yu Qi's little tricks at a glance. Where did she get the confidence to sow discord between her and Xiaoxi, their sisterly bond?
Yu Qi appeared hesitant, her expression caught between wanting to speak and holding back.
"Miss Ruan, you’ve just returned to the Ruan family and don’t yet understand Xiaoxi. I’ve spent more time with her than you have; I know her better. I’m telling you this for your own good."
Ruan Anmu thought to herself that it seemed the novels she read were true—at every high-society banquet, there would be a green tea type appearing. But what was less than beautiful was that she was now the target of such a person.
Just as Ruan Anmu was about to retort, a lazy voice came from behind her.
"Yu Qi, why don’t you tell us what kind of person I am, hmm?"
Ruan Fuxi walked over to Ruan Anmu's side, her left arm wrapped around her waist while her right hand swirled a glass of champagne, looking at Yu Qi with a smile that held no warmth.
Yu Qi clearly hadn’t expected Ruan Fuxi to appear here; upon seeing her, her face turned pale.
"Xiaoxi—"
Ruan Fuxi raised her hand to interrupt whatever Yu Qi was about to say.
"You don’t get to call me Xiaoxi, especially not someone who constantly slanders me behind my back. You don’t deserve that."
Yu Qi looked aggrieved. "Xiaoxi, you’ve misunderstood me."
She felt a sense of foreboding and thought it best to leave quickly before Ruan Fuxi heard how she had spoken to Ruan Anmu.
But Ruan Fuxi stopped her.
"Hold on, you haven’t clarified your previous statement. What exactly were you trying to imply when you spoke to Xiaomu? Are you suggesting that I covet what belongs to her?"
Yu Qi wanted to argue further, but Ruan Anmu interjected firmly and with conviction:
"Xiaoxi, that’s exactly what she means; I can tell!"
Yu Qi felt like she could vomit blood from the frustration of listening to their exchange.
She thought to herself that Ruan Anmu must be out of her mind. Although she indeed harbored thoughts of sowing discord between them, she was merely trying to remind her. What kind of spell had Ruan Fuxi cast on Ruan Anmu that made her trust her so completely? It was truly laughable; how could a genuine daughter of a wealthy family have any sisterly bond with a fake one?
Yu Qi felt helpless and looked at Fu Sihan with tears in her eyes. Fu Sihan frowned and ignored her. Seeing his expression made Yu Qi feel as if her heart were shattering into pieces. She liked him so much; did he really not feel anything for her at all?
Yu Qi then turned to Yu Jing, looking pitiful. "Brother, you know I didn't mean it like that."
Yu Jing also frowned. He had sensed something was off in Yu Qi's words earlier, but after all, she was nominally a daughter of the Yu family, and he couldn't let her embarrass herself in public. So he said, "Miss Ruan, my sister spoke out of turn just now; I apologize on her behalf."
Ruan Fuxi raised an eyebrow and looked at him leisurely. Yu Jing was unsure of her intentions when suddenly he heard Ruan Fuxi's voice.
"Mr. Yu, I don't think you and Yu Qi are actually siblings."
Yu Jing frowned, puzzled as to why Ruan Fuxi would suddenly bring this up. Everyone in the capital knew that Yu Qi was adopted. However, the next thing Ruan Fuxi said made Yu Jing's expression change immediately.
"Looking at your brotherly bond, you clearly have a biological sister still alive; why then do you call a counterfeit your sister?"
Yu Jing couldn't focus on anything else and immediately pressed for answers.
