"This is so delicious, so fragrant! My dear wife, how did you make this? Why is it so good?" Tang Zhicheng exclaimed as he devoured the noodles.
Ye Fangfei knew that no one could escape the allure of instant noodles.
"Of course it's delicious! Just look at all the good ingredients we have," she replied playfully. "But we’ve run out of white flour completely, and the oil we had, which was supposed to last six months, is now barely enough for a month."
Tang Zhicheng understood that such a tasty dish must have used a lot of good ingredients. However, he hadn't expected it to be this much. After all, he had prepared everything at home himself—he bought ten kilograms of white flour and five kilograms of oil. Even though they had eaten some over the past few days, he thought there was still plenty left.
He hadn’t realized that they had gone through it all so quickly. However, he didn’t blame Ye Fangfei; she was just worried that he wouldn’t eat well on the road and wanted to make him something tasty.
"But what about our supplies? What will you do in the coming days?" he asked.
"I’ll manage. I don’t necessarily need white flour. We still have cornmeal, and there’s rice and millet too. Don’t worry, I won’t go hungry," Ye Fangfei reassured him.
"Still, cornmeal isn’t as nutritious as white flour," he said. "How about this: we still have plenty of grain coupons at home. You can buy steamed buns from the state-run restaurant."
"But we don’t have meat coupons anymore, so we can’t buy meat buns," he added quickly with a solution.
"I’ll figure it out; you just focus on your trip," Ye Fangfei said appreciatively, touched by his concern.
Tang Zhicheng knew that his wife might not follow his advice exactly, but with his imminent business trip, there was little he could do.
The next day, Ye Fangfei packed a large tote bag for him to take along. Inside were the stir-fried noodles from yesterday and some fried noodles as well. There were also two jars of mushroom sauce, a lunch box, and a porcelain mug for drinking water or soaking noodles. She even included two sets of clean clothes.
Since leaving home, this was the first time someone had taken such meticulous care of him before a trip.
"Be careful at home, my dear. Make sure to close the doors and windows tightly at night. Treat yourself to some good meals at the state-run hotel from time to time, and don’t be too hard on yourself. When I come back, I’ll bring you some delicious food." Tang Zhicheng said as he hugged Ye Fangfei one last time before placing his handbag in his car.
Ye Fangfei watched Tang Zhicheng leave, then returned home to wash the dishes and tidy up the kitchen. She went through the house, making sure everything was in order. After realizing she hadn’t visited her parents in a few days, she decided to take her bike and head over to see them.
As luck would have it, she ran into Yao Feixue just as she was leaving. The two had no prior interaction, and Ye Fangfei intended to ignore her and ride off. However, Yao Feixue called out, "Wait! I’m Yao Feixue, the wife of Ji Weijun."
After saying this, Yao Feixue looked at Ye Fangfei expectantly, waiting for a response. Ye Fangfei felt puzzled by being stopped and even more confused by Yao Feixue's introduction. She had no idea what Yao Feixue wanted, so she remained silent and simply stared at her.
Seeing that Ye Fangfei wasn’t going to engage in conversation, Yao Feixue considered walking away but couldn’t help but admire the beautiful ruffled blouse Ye Fangfei was wearing. She stomped her foot in frustration before continuing, "I work at the department store."
