He also brought back a few apples from the car factory, a pound of white sugar, two pounds of brown sugar, and five pounds of rice.
Additionally, he collected sesame oil, sunflower seeds, and other items from the tractor and flour factories. The team leader, Aunt Fang, secretly looked after Tang Zhi, which is why good fortune came his way.
Tang Zhi wasn't foolish; he didn't take everything home for himself but also shared some with Aunt Fang. No matter how close relatives are, one cannot just accept benefits without a thought; it's essential to give something back in return.
The last delivery was from the towel factory, which was the final stop. After this, Tang Zhi wouldn't need to make any more trips. He had worked tirelessly for the past two months to save up his vacation days so he could spend a few extra days at home.
When Ye Fangfei returned home, she took the items inside, had a sip of hot water, and rested for a while. She then reorganized what she planned to take back to her hometown. She packed the white sugar, brown sugar, and canned apples together for the trip.
These items were rare in the countryside; although her family lacked them too, they received monthly rations and could always buy what they needed. Moreover, since she worked at the goods building, it was relatively convenient for her to purchase things.
After finishing packing for her hometown trip, Ye Fangfei tidied up other items as well. She locked away the rice, flour, and oil in the kitchen cabinet. She also checked on the cabbage and radishes to ensure they wouldn’t spoil before their return.
Once everything was done, Ye Fangfei started organizing clothes for herself and Tang Zhi. They planned to stay for over ten days, so they needed to pack at least a couple of extra outfits along with their toiletries.
While she was busy packing, there was a knock on the courtyard door. She vaguely heard someone outside calling her name.
Ye Fangfei quickly set down her coat and went to open the door. "Who is it?" she asked cautiously without opening it right away.
"It's me, Feifei. Open up," came the voice of Hao Chunying from outside as she stamped her feet.
As soon as Ye Fangfei heard the knock, she quickly opened the door. "Mom, what brings you here on such a snowy day?"
Hao Chunying stomped her feet to shake off the snow and replied as she stepped inside, "I came to bring you something."
"Come in! What could possibly be so urgent that it needs to be delivered right now?" Ye Fangfei said, taking the bag from Hao Chunying's hands.
Once they were inside, Ye Fangfei poured a cup of hot water for her mother, adding some brown sugar. "Here, drink this to warm yourself up."
"Mom, are you on break now?" Ye Fangfei asked.
"Yes, I won’t be going to work tomorrow," Hao Chunying said, taking a sip of the sweetened water and letting out a contented sigh.
"You came straight from the factory? You haven't gone home yet?" Ye Fangfei was surprised that her mother had come directly to deliver something without returning home first.
"Today was the last day at the factory. I slipped out before finishing my shift," Hao Chunying casually explained.
Since it was the final day of work, the machines had already stopped. They were just tidying up a bit, and with nothing else to do, everyone left early.
It wasn't just her; everyone was doing the same thing. The supervisors turned a blind eye, pretending not to notice. After all, with the holiday approaching, no one wanted to stir up trouble unnecessarily.
"I got some fabric from Aunt Bai for you. Since you're heading back to your hometown, you can take it with you."
