Wen Qian glanced at him, then sat down by the bed, her eyelids drooping as she remained silent.
Lu Zheng looked at her, standing by the bed without daring to sit down. He felt uncertain about what she was thinking. He wasn't sure of her attitude; this was indeed his fault.
This was the second time he had taken his son out alone, and it was also the first time since coming here. He never expected something like this to happen!
Lu Zheng furrowed his brows tightly, his face stern and even more intimidating than usual.
Wen Qian suddenly looked up at Lu Zheng. Her voice was a bit hoarse, her gaze cold yet tinged with disappointment. "Lu Zheng, do you think you have any responsibility for what happened this time?
This was Xiao Chen's first visit here, and something like this occurred. You know how much he wanted to come here before. Back in the village, every night before going to sleep, Xiao Chen would ask me, 'Mom, when are we going to Dad's? I want to go.'
Xiao Chen's eyes were filled with hope, longing, and innocent charm. However, he was a sensitive child with a delicate mind who rarely cried or complained.
Otherwise, how could she have known so little? She always felt inadequate and unworthy of being Xiao Chen's mother. A child like him should have been born into a better family, enjoying a happy childhood instead of suffering alongside her. He shouldn't have had to endure such a tragic fate in his past life.
When Xiao Chen cried so heartbreakingly this time, her heart twisted painfully the moment she saw him from the crowd. For a brief moment, she hated herself for not being there or for allowing Xiao Chen to experience this.
After her rebirth, she didn't want to see him suffer even the slightest harm again. A tear slipped from the corner of Wen Qian's eye, rolling down her cheek and onto her pants, leaving a dark circle behind. She raised her hand to wipe away the tears on her face, her eyes fixed on the circle on her pants.
Once hurt, a mark would be left in one's heart; especially for a child as sensitive as Xiao Chen. She knew she might be a bit obsessive, but the images from before her rebirth lingered vividly in her mind, haunting her constantly—especially when Xiao Chen was hurt; those memories would always resurface unbidden.
It felt like a tangled mess that continuously entangled itself in her thoughts.
Lu Zheng watched Wen Qian cry and recalled the look in her eyes just moments ago; he felt a pang of pain deep within him. "I know it's my fault. I will definitely protect Xiao Chen from now on."
"Don't blame yourself; I should be the one feeling guilty."
He looked at Wen Qian, who appeared distressed, wanting to embrace her, but he felt he had no right to do so.
Wen Qian composed herself, wiped away the tears at the corners of her eyes, and resolutely looked at Lu Zheng. "I won't stop you from taking Xiao Chen. After all, you are his father, and he needs your company. However, if this happens again, I will move out with Xiao Chen. You two can't accommodate us."
With that, Wen Qian turned and walked out the door, leaving Lu Zheng standing alone in the room.
Though it was still light outside, Lu Zheng felt an overwhelming sense of desolation surrounding him.
He truly had no right to make mistakes!
He sat dejectedly on the bed, leaning against the wall with his legs hanging off the side, raising a hand to cover his eyes.
Why was it so difficult for him?
In the army, he felt he could give his all; he was an outstanding soldier, admired by everyone.
But why was love so challenging?
He sensed that if things continued like this, he would face being replaced—another soldier stepping in to take his place.
Wen Qian stepped outside and saw Lu Chen and Wen Yuanyuan sitting at the table, eating and playing together.
Despite it being their first meeting, they seemed to get along exceptionally well.
She glanced at the lunch boxes on the table; their family hadn't even eaten yet!
"Clap clap clap! Xiao Qian! You're here!"
Wen Qian turned to see Aunt Tian outside the door and hurried over to open it.
"Auntie, come in quickly!"
"I'm not coming in; just take the thermos inside. There are a few buns in the basket; you all can make do with those for now."
Wen Qian looked at Aunt Tian with gratitude filling her eyes.
It was already past mealtime; she touched the buns and felt they were still warm, clearly just freshly made by Aunt Tian.
"Quickly take them! You're not eating? Xiao Chen hasn't eaten yet!"
"I'll hurry; my daughter-in-law is still at home. Once you're settled, I'll bring her over so we can chat together."
Wen Qian felt a surge of emotion in her heart as she accepted what Aunt Tian handed her. Just as Aunt Tian turned to leave, Wen Qian quickly called out to her.
"Aunt, don't go just yet! I have something for you!"
"What is it?"
Wen Qian hurriedly ran into the house with a bundle in her arms, while behind her, Aunt Tian scolded, "Slow down! Why are you running?"
Wen Qian promised to slow down, but her feet didn’t match her words. She pulled out a pack of cookies, a handful of White Rabbit candies, and a packet of milk powder from her bag and placed them in a basket.
Aunt Tian looked at the basket with confusion. "What are you doing? You could have waited until after we ate for me to take it! No need to make a special trip."
When she lifted the cloth covering the top, she gasped in surprise. "Oh my! You silly girl, take this back! Save it for Xiao Chen; that child looks so thin."
Aunt Tian refused to accept it no matter what. Wen Qian called out to her, "Aunt!"
"Aunt, please take it! I want to thank you. If it weren't for your help earlier, I might not have even made it here!"
"Take the cookies and candies for my nephew, and the milk powder is for my sister-in-law. She's pregnant and needs the nutrition."
"And you brought so many buns and hot water earlier—this is all heartfelt. What I’m giving you is also from the heart. If you don’t want it, then I won’t keep it either."
As Wen Qian spoke, she turned to go back inside to put the items away. Aunt Tian helplessly grabbed her arm.
"You little girl, you're really driving me crazy!"
"Alright, I'll shamelessly accept it then. Next time, I'll cook my specialty for you all."
"Thank you, Aunt!"
Aunt Tian looked at her with mock annoyance and poked her forehead lightly. "Even if I hadn’t taken it just now, you would have insisted anyway. Don’t try to fool this old woman."
Wen Qian and Aunt Tian exchanged smiles. "Alright then, hurry up and eat; I’ll be on my way."
As Wen Qian watched Aunt Tian’s retreating figure, warmth filled her heart. This feeling of being cared for by an elder was something she hadn’t felt in a long time since receiving such kindness from her mother and Aunt Tong.
Wen Qian walked into the house and called for Lu Zheng, Lu Chen, and Wen Yuanyuan to come eat. The little girl felt a bit shy at first but quickly forgot everything after taking a couple of bites.
With the pickles that Meng Fang had given them, the buns became more enjoyable to eat. Wen Qian even prepared a cup of milk powder for each person.
As they ate, Wen Yuanyuan’s eyes began to redden; tears started falling down her cheeks as her little face grew increasingly pitiful. She looked at Wen Qian with sorrowful eyes and cried out, "If only my mom were here..."
