Wen Qian was truly exasperated. Even a simple shopping trip couldn't be done in peace; there were always busybodies around, making comments and stirring trouble. She turned to see a well-dressed woman, but then her gaze fell on Wu Mei.
Unbelievable!
When she couldn't win the argument herself, she had to call for backup. Before Wen Qian could say anything, the older sister was already displeased. "How can you talk like that? What do you mean by 'not matching'? Isn’t this fabric here for people to look at and choose? And what’s with your comments about it getting dirty? Why do you have to be so rude?"
"What’s the deal? Just because you think someone doesn’t match up doesn’t mean you do."
The older sister glared at Wen Qian and then turned to the woman, pointing at Wen Qian. "In my opinion, this girl is actually prettier than you. Do you even know what you look like?"
"Sure, she might be a bit skinny and her skin might be a little yellow, but just look at her features! Those big eyes, double eyelids, a lovely little face, a nice mouth, a decent nose—everything about her is attractive! And then look at yourself. I’m not being harsh; it’s just the truth that you can’t compare."
Wen Qian looked at the older sister in astonishment; her words were quite powerful! The woman across from them seemed stunned by the sudden onslaught.
Wen Qian hadn’t expected the older sister to take such a liking to her right off the bat!
After finishing her tirade, the older sister winked at Wen Qian and tossed a pink fabric onto the table, shooting an eye-roll at Wu Mei and the woman.
"Look at this fabric! Are those two big handprints yours?"
"You’re worried about someone dirtying it, but it seems you’re the one who got it dirty!"
The counter staff noticed the commotion and looked over. The older sister pointed out the two large black smudges on the fabric.
"Comrade, just now when we were looking at it, there weren’t any marks. It was only after she came over that they appeared."
The woman stepped back in panic and pointed at the older sister. "You’re slandering me! What if you all are trying to frame me?"
The older sister didn’t waste any words; she swiftly grabbed the woman’s hand and twisted her wrist until her palm opened up.
There was black stuff stuck to her fingers—sticky and clearly matching the fabric.
"Look at that! The evidence is right here; you still want to deny it?"
With both witness and material evidence against her, the woman had no way out. Stammering, she tried to turn the tables using the older sister's own words.
"But didn’t you just say that things displayed on the counter are meant for people to choose? Why should anyone worry about them getting dirty?"
"I was just saying it, but I never did anything so despicable."
The older sister pulled Wen Qian along to continue selecting fabric, while a staff member discussed compensation matters with the woman and Wu Mei. Wen Qian chose blue and green fabric for herself and picked out a few pieces for her son as well. In a rare good mood, she also selected two pieces for Lu Zheng, intending to make him a complete outfit.
Once they had finished choosing the fabric, Wu Mei and the woman returned. The woman leaned close to Wen Qian and whispered threateningly, "Don't get too cocky. If you dare to bully Xiao Xue, you'll have to deal with me. My name is Zhang Yanru, and I won't let you off easily."
Wen Qian nodded, "I understand, Zhang Yanru."
Zhang Yanru widened her eyes in disbelief and pointed a trembling finger at Wen Qian. "How do you know my name? This is our first meeting! Did I somehow expose myself in front of the military family compound?"
Before Wen Qian could respond, Wu Mei behind her couldn't hold back any longer. Frowning, she whispered a reminder, "Xiao Ru, you just said your name."
Wen Qian burst into laughter!
Another foolish teammate!
"Yes, yes, that's right!"
"Oh no, I forgot! I forgot!" Zhang Yanru exclaimed in panic, slapping her forehead. Hearing Wen Qian laugh made her glare fiercely at her. "You dare to mock me? Just wait!"
With that, she hurriedly pulled Wu Mei away!
How embarrassing!
Wen Qian paid for the fabric and placed it in Lu Zheng's wooden frame on his back.
The two of them went to check out the sewing machines!
Over here, there were noticeably fewer people; the areas selling fabric and food were bustling with activity. However, the section for larger items only had a few people coming by occasionally.
The staff member was initially bored, munching on sunflower seeds when they noticed Wen Qian approaching. They looked her up and down with a neutral expression and continued chatting among themselves until an older sister came over to ask Wen Qian, "Hello there! What are you looking to buy?"
I bought a sewing machine. Is someone in your family getting married?
No, I just bought it for home use.
The older sister smiled and led Wen Qian to a sewing machine in the corner. "Comrade, for home use, this one is just fine. Don’t be fooled by its looks; it’s durable and works well!"
Wen Qian thought to herself that she had good judgment; the older sister seemed like a straightforward person.
The older sister pointed to other sewing machines, saying, "Some of these aren’t even as good as this one. But you know, when it comes to marriage, it’s all about appearances. Since I see you’re just buying for home use, I’m recommending one that’s both practical and affordable."
Wen Qian tried it out and found it indeed worked better than the one at Aunt Tian's house.
"Big Sister Wu, what are you recommending? Do you think she can afford it? In the end, it’ll just be a hassle."
Wen Qian didn’t respond but smiled slightly, inadvertently revealing her wristwatch.
The watch glimmered in the sunlight, catching the eye of the woman speaking, making her eyes widen in surprise. She spat out the sunflower seed shell from her mouth, clapped her hands, and laughed as she approached, elbowing Big Sister Wu aside.
"Look at me! I’m not good with words. Comrade, do you want to take a look at other options? There are some that look better and work even better."
Lu Zheng came over and sensed the atmosphere was a bit off; he had just taken Lu Chen outside to use the restroom. So he let Wen Qian go check things out on her own for a moment.
He stood beside her and asked quietly, "What’s going on?"
As soon as Lu Zheng stood next to Wen Qian, the excitement in her eyes sparkled even more. This man also wore a watch; their family situation must be decent. Today they would definitely sell a sewing machine!
Wen Qian shook her head with a smile, pulling Big Sister Wu closer and pointing at the recommended sewing machine. "This one! I’ll buy it!"
"Alright! I’ll write up the ticket for you right now."
Wen Qian interrupted the woman who was about to run off. "No need! Just let this big sister handle it; you can continue enjoying your sunflower seeds! They’re so delicious! No need to come here to sell sewing machines."
"I—I didn’t mean to imply that..."
"You don’t need to say anything; your narrow-mindedness is obvious. I’m just worried about missing parts when buying something."
The woman left with a scowl on her face.
Lu Zheng looked at Sister Wu, frowning in hesitation. "Sister Wu? How did you end up in this line of work?"
