Lu Zheng shook his head with a smile and casually said, "It's nothing. Dad just bumped into something. I'll be fine in a few days."
Lu Chen nodded happily, wrapping his arms around Lu Zheng's neck and joyfully calling him "Dad."
Though Lu Chen was young and easily fooled, Wen Qian knew he was lying. If it was just a bump, why did he need bandages? Why was he using the strength of his neck to support his arm? His arm must be injured.
"Let's eat first. You haven't had anything to eat yet!" Wen Qian had already wiped away her tears and adjusted her emotions. She opened the lunch box on the table and placed it down. Looking at the food, she felt a bit relieved that she had made extra because she had been lost in thought.
Just then, Lu Zheng returned, and finally, someone could take care of things.
During dinner, Lu Zheng struggled to hold chopsticks with his injured right arm. Wen Qian went to the kitchen and brought him a spoon.
"Use this to eat!"
"Thank you!"
"It's nothing, no need to thank me."
Holding the spoon, Lu Zheng began to eat. Seeing that his father was having trouble, Lu Chen picked up some vegetables and placed them on Lu Zheng's bun.
"Dad, Chenchen is putting food on your plate."
Lu Zheng looked at his caring son and smiled with appreciation. His gaze drifted to Wen Qian sitting across from him. He had heard rumors at the hospital; to avoid worrying her, he had hurried back after taking care of his injury.
But it was too late; there were already plenty of rumors circulating in the unit. After changing clothes upon returning, he intended to find her in the cafeteria but discovered she had already come back.
After finishing his meal, Lu Zheng quietly watched Wen Qian and Lu Chen eat. He spoke up to clarify, "It was Team Leader Yi who got hurt; I only injured my arm."
"The situation was urgent, and everyone saw me covered in blood, so they started spreading rumors."
"I didn't expect it would escalate like this, which is why I rushed back—I didn't want you and Chenchen to worry."
Wen Qian responded with a muffled "mm," clearly still worried.
Seeing her indifferent attitude made Lu Zheng anxious. The way she had looked earlier pierced his heart like needles. She must have been extremely worried; otherwise, she wouldn't have cried.
"What happened to your arm?"
Lu Zheng raised his gaze to Wen Qian. His lips moved, but no words came out. It was only when he saw the seriousness in her eyes that he sighed helplessly and said, "Gunshot wound. It's not serious, just an accidental fracture. The doctor said it's nothing major; it will heal with time."
Wen Qian pulled Lu Chen into the room to let him take a nap. Although Lu Chen was reluctant to sleep, he eventually succumbed to his drowsiness and drifted off. The night before, he had stayed up late, persistently asking Wen Qian about Lu Zheng.
Wen Qian could only comfort him and encourage him to sleep.
Once Lu Chen was asleep, Wen Qian sat on the edge of the bed, leaning against the wall, looking down at his sleeping face. Her eyes softened with a hint of a smile.
Suddenly, Lu Zheng appeared at the door, gesturing for her to step outside.
Wen Qian slowly got up and walked out, closing the door behind her to block out the noise from outside.
As soon as she stepped out, she was enveloped in Lu Zheng's embrace. He rested his head on her shoulder, bending slightly as he took a deep breath.
Wen Qian's body tensed up instantly. She turned her head slowly, staring at him in a daze.
Seeing that Wen Qian showed no sign of resistance, Lu Zheng tightened his hold on her, his eyes filled with a sense of calm.
He thought he was really going to die!
In that moment, memories flashed through his mind—his first encounter with Wen Qian and that slap she had given him. He also recalled Lu Chen's pleading eyes looking up at him.
At that moment, he felt genuine fear; he was afraid of dying. He couldn't bear to think about what would happen if he really did die.
Lu Zheng closed his eyes and held her tightly.
Wen Qian gradually relaxed her body. Hesitantly, she raised her hand and patted the back of his hand in a soothing gesture.
Lu Zheng remembered what his comrades had said before. He opened his mouth as if to ask something but thought better of it; it wasn't the right time yet. He decided to wait until everything was resolved before bringing it up.
After holding each other for a while, Wen Qian instinctively shifted her body. Lu Zheng slowly loosened his grip and stood up.
He looked down at her face, gradually withdrawing his hands while his eyes held a deeper meaning.
Wen Qian noticed his intense gaze and blinked involuntarily. She tried to move away but found that the large hand behind her pressed down again.
Lu Zheng swallowed hard, narrowing his eyes as he focused intently on her rosy lips.
Wen Qian smiled awkwardly, attempting to pull away again, but the hand behind her held her firmly in place.
Taking a few deep breaths, she looked up at the man in front of her with an expression that seemed to ask: What do you want?
Lu Zheng's next move made it clear what he truly desired.
The man suddenly lowered his head, his eyes fixated on the blush on her cheeks, and his lips pressed perfectly against hers.
Wen Qian's eyes widened in shock as she felt the warmth of his lips. She looked at Lu Zheng in disbelief.
Lu Zheng's hand, which was resting on her waist, slowly moved to her head, gently caressing her hair in a soothing manner.
Wen Qian stood frozen, her mind blank and unsure of what to do.
Seeing her dazed expression, Lu Zheng couldn't help but smile softly, slowly moving his lips again.
Wen Qian, flustered and at a loss, clenched her hands tightly. Her eyes blinked rapidly as she tried to suppress the urge to bite her lip.
Lu Zheng applied more pressure with his hand on her head and parted his lips slightly.
"Xiao Qian, Xiao Qian, this is wrong."
Suddenly, Wen Qian heard Aunt Tian's voice and instinctively pushed Lu Zheng away. She hurriedly lowered her head to tug at her clothes, feeling the heat radiating from her flushed face.
Lu Zheng stumbled back a bit, steadying himself by grasping the chair. He let out a low chuckle.
"Xiao Qian, this is wrong. It’s not Lu Zheng who is hurt; it’s Captain Yi who is injured. Someone from the unit just came to take Yi Xuecha and her daughter to the hospital."
Aunt Tian rushed into the room and immediately noticed Lu Zheng standing nearby and Wen Qian with her head down.
She was momentarily speechless, sensing that the atmosphere was quite strange.
With an awkward smile, she said, "Oh dear, I seem to have come at an inconvenient time. Lu Zheng, have you eaten? Would you like to come over to my house for a meal? I just finished cooking; you can still have something warm."
Then she noticed Lu Zheng's arm and exclaimed, "Oh no! What happened to your arm? Is it serious?"
Lu Zheng smiled faintly, though his smile seemed forced yet sincere. "Auntie, I've already eaten. My wife made dinner for us; we’ve both had our fill. My arm is fine; it just needs some rest. It's not serious."
"Alright then, I’ll take my leave. You should rest well!"
As Aunt Tian left, she silently thought that perhaps she had come at the wrong time; it felt like something had been off between Lu Zheng and Wen Qian just moments ago. Moreover, Wen Qian had been looking down without saying a word.
Inside the room, silence enveloped them in an instant.
Wen Qian touched her flushed face again in embarrassment. With a slight frown of frustration, she closed her eyes for a moment. When she opened them again, she found Lu Zheng's smiling gaze fixed intently on her.
