Before she set off, her gaze lingered on Lu Zheng for the last time. Her voice trembled, thick with an uncontainable sorrow, her eyes glistening with tears, devoid of any provocation—only sadness remained. It was a deep-seated grief that resonated within her.
She felt as if she had laid bare her most precious heart before him, yet he had never once looked away. A hoarse voice broke through the silence, "Lu Zheng, I apologize. I have no regrets. If it weren't for you, I might have died long ago. In the next life, will you like me?"
"I will find you in the next life, and I promise to be pure and clean."
Lu Zheng's calm gaze fell upon her, and without a hint of hesitation, he replied, "No." He wished to encounter Wen Qian and Chen Chen again in the next life. He hoped to treat them well, to love them deeply from the very beginning, ensuring they would not suffer so much pain.
Tears streamed down Chi Xuecha's cheeks. They fell like rain as she sobbed quietly. "You won't leave me for the next life!" she cried out in despair. "How ridiculous! I'm so ashamed!"
Resolutely, she opened her eyes and lifted her head, breaking free from the restraints that had loosened behind her. She stood up and ran towards the car, only to collide with its corner.
In an instant, Chi Xuecha spun and fell to the ground! Everyone was taken aback; by the time they reacted, she had already hit the ground hard.
"Xiao Xue!" Guan Weiguang rushed over and saw Chi Xuecha lying on the ground, blood streaming from her head. "Xiao Xue, don’t sleep! Don’t sleep! I’ll take you to the hospital!"
Panicking, Guan Weiguang picked up Chi Xuecha and hurried towards the infirmary, but after just two steps, he stumbled and fell heavily to the ground. As they both fell, Guan Weiguang shielded Chi Xuecha with his body, becoming a human cushion.
Immediately after, he sprang back up and carried her away.
"Xiaoxue, don't sleep, don't sleep. If you don't sleep, I will marry you, okay? I will marry you."
Chixue Cha closed her eyes, her mind blank, yet there was a constant voice echoing in her head. She wanted to see who was calling her. How could someone like her, so flawed, possibly be liked by anyone?
Guo Weiguang was anxious, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. He held Chixue Cha tightly, watching as her face grew paler and the blood continued to flow from her wounds. Had he begun to care for her less than before? He didn't want her to suffer through life alongside him; he wished for her happiness.
At that moment, the leader arrived beside Lu Zheng with a group of people. "Team Leader Chi, you can't do anything right now. There are matters that need verification; you'll have to wait until the investigation is concluded."
Team Leader Chi and his wife were taken away. Deputy Wen came over and patted Lu Zheng on the shoulder, looking at him with pity and sympathy. Lu Zheng shook his head with a faint smile. Hadn't he anticipated this outcome? After all, he had once served as a scout; he wasn't foolish and could see the signs.
When he first joined the army, it was Team Leader Chi who had guided him. They had shared drinks and conversations like brothers! When did things change so drastically?
"Go home and rest for now! Come back when we need your cooperation again," someone suggested. Lu Zheng nodded in agreement. Now, debts were settled cleanly! If he truly wanted to maintain Team Leader Chi's dignity, he wouldn't have spoken such harsh words to Chixue Cha from the very beginning. At least he would have left some room for kindness!
Upon returning home, Lu Zheng opened the door and checked his injured arm, noticing it seemed to have worsened slightly. He frowned in displeasure.
The plan was about to be put on hold again!
After class, Wen Qian brought Lu Chen home. As soon as they arrived at the family compound, they were met with a flurry of gossip. Some said that Lu Zheng had been stabbed by Chi Xuecha and had not gone to the hospital, returning home alone. Others claimed that Chi Xuecha had committed suicide and was being held by Guan Weiguang at the hospital. There were even rumors that Team Leader Chi and his wife had been taken away by their superiors! Lu Zheng had been deceived!!!
Everyone was buzzing with speculation, and even when mealtime approached, they couldn't bear to leave, choosing instead to continue their discussions. Lu Chen felt anxious upon hearing this and pulled Wen Qian towards their home.
"Mom, let’s hurry and check on Dad. Is he hurt again?"
Wen Qian was worried too, but she quickly regained her composure. Lu Zheng should be fine; if he were injured, he would have gone to the hospital himself instead of coming home alone. So it was likely related to the situation with Team Leader Chi and Chi Xuecha.
By the time they reached home, a meal that Lu Zheng had prepared was already laid out on the dining table. He sat there in a daze until Lu Chen jumped into his arms, snapping him back to reality.
"Dad, are you hurt?" Lu Chen asked eagerly. "Where are you hurt? Let me see!"
He began tugging at Lu Zheng's shirt, his little hands exploring everywhere. Lu Zheng helplessly grasped his small hands to comfort him.
"I'm not hurt; it's just people talking nonsense. Don't worry, Chenchen. Let’s eat!"
The dining table fell silent for a moment. Lu Chen still seemed unconvinced and occasionally picked up food for Lu Zheng, insisting he eat more.
Lu Zheng smiled and nodded, enjoying the dishes his son lovingly offered him.
After dinner, Wen Qian coaxed the little one to sleep. Once he was sound asleep, she sat across from Lu Zheng.
He pulled her into the bedroom, closed the door, pressed her onto the bed, and then embraced her tightly.
The two lay flat on the bed, with Lu Zheng holding her tightly in his arms. Wen Qian remained still, quietly accompanying him. After a long while, the man's voice finally broke the silence.
Bitter and sorrowful!
"Let me tell you about today’s events so you won’t worry," he said.
He recounted the general course of events. Wen Qian was shocked and found it hard to believe. She had never imagined there would be so many twists and turns!
"I had noticed it long ago; I just didn’t want to expose it. It was inconsequential to me!" he continued, a hint of relief creeping into his tone.
He turned his head to look at Wen Qian, his eyes deep with emotion. "If I really... if I were gone, I wouldn’t receive your letter. I might truly miss out on you and your son."
Would they fade away like a dream? Lu Zheng dared not think about it, nor could he bear to face the images that haunted him! The thought of them brought him unbearable pain; he wanted to break through the dream and punish those who had bullied them, to rescue them from their plight.
Wen Qian helplessly tugged at her lips, feeling exasperated. "Why do we keep circling back to this?" she murmured softly. "Don’t you really want to seek justice?"
"Justice?" he echoed, incredulous. "Does it even exist in this world?"
He had never attempted the impossible before, but now that he had a chance, why not take it? He had long since repaid the debt owed to Captain Chi!
In the past, he hadn’t thought about it, but now that the opportunity presented itself, he would pursue it.
The two of them exchanged glances—she looked up while he lowered his gaze. Their eyes met, and they understood each other’s unspoken thoughts.
