I held the copper coin in my hand, momentarily lost in thought. The incense curled in the meditation room, yet I could not see the Old Daoist's figure.
"The fate of your life should not be extinguished," echoed in my mind. Shaking my head, I stuffed the coin into my pocket and rose to leave the temple.
The night was deep as I rode my electric bike back to my rented room. Just as I was about to open the door, I noticed a faint light seeping through the crack.
I held my breath and gently pushed the door open.
"Xiao Dao, you finally returned," Li Chun said, sitting on the edge of my bed with a seductive smile on her face.
"How did you get in?" I asked warily. After absorbing her Life Energy last time, I thought she might come here for revenge.
"Landlord Yang let me in," she replied, standing up and walking toward me. "I've been waiting for you."
I took a step back. Landlord Yang was out of the hospital so soon?
He wasn’t dead; my guilt felt less burdensome.
"Did you need something?"
"I heard you've been receiving treatment at Sublimation Hospital recently?" A strange glimmer flashed in her eyes. "Dean Li is quite an impressive person."
"I just went for a routine check-up," I said, trying to sound calm.
"Is that so?" She chuckled lightly. "Then what is this?"
Following her gaze, I realized she was looking at the Life Power Bank in my pocket!
I sneered, "So you’re one of Li Xudong's people."
"Smart," she said with a charming smile. "Why don't we collaborate? We can hand this over to Dean Li; he will provide us with many benefits."
"Get out!" I shouted sternly.
Her expression changed. "Don't drink the toast and refuse the punishment. How long do you think you can keep this a secret?"
I yelled in desperation, "I'm telling you one last time, leave!"
"You'll regret this," she said coldly before turning to leave.
I locked the door and collapsed onto the bed. Things were getting more complicated. Li Chun, Li Xudong—what exactly did they want?
Suddenly, my phone vibrated. It was a message from Zhu Qi: "Brother, I'm in the hospital. I've been feeling really unwell lately."
A wave of dread washed over me.
It was all my fault; I shouldn't have absorbed Zhu Qi's Life Energy.
With so many people in the world, why did I have to draw energy from my good brother? I decided to go see him at the hospital.
By the time I arrived at Sublimation Hospital, it was already late at night. In the ward, Zhu Qi lay on the bed, his face pale.
"What happened?" I asked.
"I don't know; I suddenly felt weak all over," he replied weakly. "The doctor said it might be malnutrition."
A chill ran through me as I realized...
My heart sank heavily.
"Dean Li said he would give me a special treatment," Zhu Qi continued, "He mentioned it's a newly developed nutritional supplement therapy."
I clenched my fists. Li Xudong, what exactly are you planning?
Just then, the door to the ward swung open. Li Xudong entered wearing a white coat.
"Mr. Jiang, what a coincidence," he said with his signature eerie smile, "Here to visit a friend?"
I glared at him fiercely. "What have you done to Zhu Qi?"
"Just a routine treatment," he replied nonchalantly. "By the way, how about lending me your Power Bank for some research?"
"Not a chance!"
"Then don't blame me for being rude," he sneered.
Suddenly, a pungent odor filled the air. Before I could react, I felt a wave of dizziness wash over me.
As I lost consciousness, my fingers brushed against the cool copper coin in my pocket...
