The light rain had been falling for several days. I sat by the window, watching the raindrops trickle down from the eaves, unable to shake off the gloom in my heart. Ever since the pharmacy assistant mentioned the Prince of Li Xing from the capital, my mind had been restless, and I found it hard to eat or sleep. 0

"Mother, what are you looking at?" The innocent voice of Mu Bai interrupted my thoughts. He ran over with his little legs and looked up at me with curiosity. 0

I forced a smile and lifted him onto my lap. "Mother is watching the raindrops. Do you like the rain, little Bai?" 0

Mu Bai tilted his head in thought. "I do! When it rains, Mother tells me stories." 0

A warmth spread through my heart as I hugged him a little tighter. "Little Bai, if one day someone wants to take you away from Mother, would you be willing?" 0

His small face immediately scrunched up in displeasure. "No! Little Bai wants to be with Mother forever!" 0

I felt a sense of comfort and kissed his forehead. "Good boy, Mother will never leave you." 0

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door that made my heart skip a beat, an ominous feeling washing over me. I took a deep breath, set Mu Bai down, and stood up to open the door. 0

Standing outside was a familiar figure clad in a dark brocade robe, his face looking gaunt. It was Li Chengzhi. 0

After five years apart, he seemed to have changed so much; there was a weariness etched into his brow. 0

" Qingwan," he said, his eyes red as he looked at me, his voice low and hoarse. 0

I remained silent, merely gazing coldly at him. A flicker of pain crossed Li Chengzhi's eyes as he stepped forward, reaching out to take my hand. 0

I instinctively took a step back, avoiding his touch. 0

"What do you want?" My voice was remarkably calm. 0
Li Chengzhi's hand froze in mid-air, and he forced a bitter smile. "I came to take you back." 0
"Back?" I scoffed, "This is my home; I have nowhere else to go." 0
" Qingwan, I know you're still angry with me," Li Chengzhi said, his tone laced with a hint of pleading. 0
"But I truly didn't mean to abandon you. I..." 0
"Enough!" I interrupted sharply. "I don't need your explanations. Just go; I don't want to see you again." 0
" Qingwan, please let me finish," Li Chengzhi said urgently. 0
"Five years ago, I lost my memory and remembered nothing. Once I regained it, I searched for you..." 0
"Searched for me?" I looked at him mockingly. "Why bother? I'm just Liu Wan'er's substitute, right? Did you want to bring me back to watch you two be all lovey-dovey?" 0
"No, that's not what I meant," Li Chengzhi hurriedly explained. "I just want to make up for my mistakes. I want to take care of you and the child." 0
"Take care of us?" I found it laughable. "What right do you have to take care of us?" 0
" Qingwan, it's not just about making amends and taking care of you," Li Chengzhi's voice choked with emotion. 0
"I admit that at first, I was with you to find Liu Wan'er's shadow." 0
"But later, I realized you're not her; you have an independent and beautiful soul. Your resilience, your intelligence, and your kindness all deeply attract me." 0
"I know these words may sound insincere," he chuckled self-deprecatingly, "but I swear that when I married you, it was because I genuinely wanted to spend my life with you." 0
He became lost in memories, his voice softening further. 0
"The time after our marriage was the happiest period of my life. Every day, I thank the heavens for bringing us together and for teaching me what love truly is." 0
My heart trembled involuntarily. 0
"I made an unforgivable mistake," Li Chengzhi lowered his head, his voice trembling. 0
"But I'm begging you for a chance to make it right, to take good care of you and the child." 0
I looked at him, my heart a whirlwind of emotions. 0
His gaze was sincere, his tone earnest. 0
Yet the pain from five years ago felt like a deep chasm between us, impossible to cross. 0

"Li Chengzhi," I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself. "It's over between us. Please leave and don't disturb our lives anymore." 0

Li Chengzhi looked at me with pain in his eyes. "No, Qingwan, I won't give up." 0

With that, he turned and walked away, his figure disappearing into the curtain of rain. 0
