However, I never expected that a greater crisis was quietly approaching.
The business at the clinic suddenly became desolate; where there had once been a steady stream of patients, now there were only a few. A sense of unease crept into my heart, but I couldn't pinpoint the reason.
At that moment, a pharmacy assistant approached me. "Doctor, I've heard some news," he said.
I quickly asked, "What news?"
"Recently, there's been talk around town that our clinic's medicinal herbs are problematic and have caused several deaths."
I was taken aback. "How could this be? We source our herbs from reputable merchants; there shouldn't be any issues!"
"I find it strange too," the assistant replied. "But the rumors are spreading like wildfire, and many people believe them."
My heart sank as I realized this could be a conspiracy against me. But who would do such a thing?
The cold face of Liu Wan'er flashed through my mind. Could it be her?
Just then, a commotion erupted from the street outside. My heart raced, and I quickly stood up.
A group of soldiers stormed towards the clinic, and leading them was none other than Liu Wan'er. Her face wore a chilling smile as she said, "Wen Qingwan, did you ever think I would come here?"
Instinctively, I positioned Mu Bai behind me and replied coldly, "Liu Wan'er, what do you want?"
Liu Wan'er raised the golden brocade in her hand. "I am here on official orders to inspect your clinic. Someone has reported that you are using poison to harm people; today is the day we get to the bottom of this."
Shock coursed through me; this was clearly a frame-up!
"I have practiced medicine for many years and have never committed any heinous acts," I steadied myself and declared, "If you want to investigate, then go ahead."
Liu Wan'er sneered. "Very well, then search!"
The soldiers charged into the clinic like wolves, ransacking everything in sight. I held Mu Bai tightly as I watched them turn my hard-earned clinic into a chaotic mess.
Suddenly, a soldier shouted loudly, "Miss, we found it! Here’s a packet of poison!"
I widened my eyes in disbelief as I looked at the small packet in the soldier's hand.
That wasn’t mine at all!
Liu Wan'er’s eyes flashed with triumph. "Wen Qingwan, what do you have to say for yourself?"
I gritted my teeth. "This is a frame-up! I have never seen that packet of poison!"
Liu Wan'er sneered, "Seize her!"
Several soldiers immediately stepped forward to apprehend me.
"Mother!" Mu Bai cried out in fear, clinging tightly to my leg.
My heart ached, but I felt helpless. I watched as the soldiers were about to reach me.
Just at that critical moment, a familiar voice suddenly rang out.
"Stop!"
I opened my eyes wide and saw Li Chengzhi striding toward us.
"Your Highness!" Liu Wan'er’s expression changed dramatically.
Li Chengzhi shot her a cold glance. "Liu Wan'er, how dare you falsely proclaim an imperial edict!"
Liu Wan'er turned pale. "Your Highness, I..."
"Enough!" Li Chengzhi interrupted her sternly. "I have already uncovered the truth. It was you who spread rumors to slander Qingwan's medical skills. Now you are framing her again; do you know your crimes?"
Liu Wan'er collapsed to the ground, trembling in fear. "Chengzhi, I did it all for you!"
Li Chengzhi snorted coldly. "Take her away!"
"Chengzhi, how can you be so heartless!"
Several guards stepped forward and took Liu Wan'er away.
"Li Chengzhi, you betrayed me! You betrayed me!"
Liu Wan'er's shrill voice gradually faded away, leaving the medical hall in silence once more.
Li Chengzhi turned to me, his eyes filled with regret. " Qingwan, I'm sorry. I came too late."
I watched him in silence.
Li Chengzhi let out a soft sigh, " Qingwan, actually I..."
At that moment, hurried footsteps echoed from outside.
A guard rushed in, flustered and breathless. "My lord! It's bad news!" he exclaimed. "A man in black has taken Liu Wan'er away!"
Li Chengzhi's expression changed drastically. "What?!"
A heavy dread settled in my heart, an ominous premonition washing over me.
Mu Bai!
I suddenly snapped back to reality, fear gripping me as I looked around frantically.
Mu Bai was nowhere to be seen!
