I took a deep breath, preparing to refuse, when I suddenly noticed another script lying at the very bottom.
Unlike the previous script, this one was only a few pages long and seemed to lack any presence.
"Why is there another script?"
"This one is for a Short Play," my agent said casually. "The shooting time is very short, and the pay can't compare to a Web Drama."
I flipped through the script. The play was titled "Becoming the Beloved of the Prince as an Unparalleled Dancer," a melodramatic love story between a dancer and a prince. The dancer was a modern person who had traveled back to ancient times. The original character had poor qualifications and was ostracized, but after the transition, she dazzled everyone with her exceptional dancing skills, catching the attention of the ruling prince at a banquet.
In short, it was a clichéd story of chasing and being chased. Although the plot was cheesy and predictable, I found myself somewhat intrigued.
A thought crossed my mind; during my breaks, I often watched Short Plays on streaming platforms, which were currently quite popular, with many works going viral. More importantly, Short Plays had lower demands on actors, focusing on fast-paced, densely packed plot twists to attract viewers.
The female lead in this play was a dancer, and the character's setting resonated with me. If I wanted to try crossing over into this field, this might be a good choice.
I told my agent about my decision, and she widened her eyes in disbelief. "Are you serious?"
In the entertainment industry, there exists a hierarchy of disdain: filmmakers look down on television drama actors, television drama actors look down on Web Drama actors, and Web Drama actors look down on those doing Short Plays. Not to mention the pay; even if this Short Play offered decent compensation, it still paled in comparison to that of a Web Drama.
She couldn't understand why I would make such a choice.
"Alright then, if you're sure about this, I won't push you. This is your decision," she said without further persuasion, putting away the Web Drama script.
My agent had more than one artist under her management; I knew that under her guidance, this script would likely end up in someone else's hands. I didn't mind; while she wasn't exactly noble—sometimes scheduling me for back-to-back gigs until I was exhausted—she never resorted to unscrupulous means to promote me. That alone was quite rare in this industry.
The Short Play was set to begin filming in a month, so I quickly enrolled in a Short-Term Acting Crash Course to get my feet wet. Although Short Plays didn't require particularly high acting skills, I didn't want to embarrass myself or become the laughingstock of the entire crew.
Thus, in the crash course, I diligently learned every acting technique and practiced continuously, striving to improve my performance level.
The facts have proven that my choice was correct.
During the filming process, although I encountered some challenges and difficulties, overall, my performance was quite satisfactory. I worked hard to understand the character and immersed myself in the role, striving to present my best self. In the end, we managed to complete this Short Play smoothly.
The other crew members were quite surprised; they probably thought I was just an inexperienced newcomer who might hold back the filming process or be unable to handle the role. However, they did not expect that I would perform quite well during the shoot. The director was also very pleased with my performance. He expressed a desire to collaborate with me again in the future, and I responded that if there were any good scripts, I hoped he would think of me first.
The production team wanted to capitalize on my rising popularity before it faded, so after quickly completing post-production editing and optimizing the visuals, the play was released online. "Becoming the Beloved of the Prince by Transforming into a Dazzling Dancer," this Short Play went viral. Although the plot was cliché and the production scale modest, the tightly woven storyline and concentrated highlights made it incredibly engaging.
With the added momentum from previous events still fresh, the viewership skyrocketed after promotion on video platforms.
