Wei Jingxi was lost in thought when Zheng Mengni gently called out to him. He felt a bit annoyed; he had previously mocked her for being distracted during their calls, and now it was his turn. He didn’t want to be a hypocrite, even if his distraction was caused by her.
"What?" Wei Jingxi asked.
"I’d like to request if we could adjust the frequency of our video calls," she said, looking demure, as if she were a good student who raised her hand before speaking.
"How often do we even talk in a day?" Wei Jingxi complained. "Ever since you went back to school, you always find an excuse to hang up on me."
"I’m in the dormitory; it’s not just my space. Constantly making calls would disturb my roommate," she replied.
"Then just move out. I happen to have two apartments near your school. I can take you to choose one this weekend, and if you like it, we can switch places every week."
As he spoke, he noticed that Zheng Mengni was on her balcony. He couldn’t understand why she was being so cautious; there were only two people living in the dormitory, and at this hour, he really didn’t believe anyone could study there.
Or perhaps it was that he, her fiancé, was someone she felt she had to hide from.
A strange sense of anxiety filled his chest, leaving him speechless as his heart raced with unease. Since childhood, his education had instilled deep-rooted beliefs in him—what did he want that he couldn’t have? The only thing eluding him was this fiancée who treated him like a venomous snake.
Wei Jingxi couldn’t bring himself to lower his pride and take their relationship a step further. He believed that admitting he liked her would mean defeat; he had never lost before and didn’t want to experience that feeling.
After all, Zheng Mengni would eventually marry him, but Wei Jingxi felt that wasn’t enough. He wanted not only her body but also her heart.
He thought that by holding something over Zheng Mengni, he could make her obediently stay by his side as his fiancée. But she was far from the naive girl she appeared to be; she always found some insincere excuse to avoid him.
Wei Jingxi tested the waters: "What are your plans? Do you want to live with me?"
Zheng Mengni shook her head. "Our schedules don’t match. I wake up early for school and would disturb you. You come back late from your outings, which would affect me too. Let’s talk about it after graduation; does that sound okay?"
Her gentle tone left no room for negotiation.
Wei Jingxi was puzzled: we would eventually live together, so what was wrong with getting accustomed to it in advance?
Why should he change himself for someone else? He wasn't used to going to bed early, and there was no need to accommodate him. If he didn't ask, how would he know that he wasn't willing?
He almost shouted out loud, but reason triumphed over emotion, and he held back his words. After all, he really didn't want to go to school.
Rather than promising Zheng Mengni something he couldn't fulfill, it was better not to make any commitments at all. Breaking a promise would hurt even more than not making one in the first place.
In the end, he simply dropped a casual "whatever" before hanging up the phone.
Wei Jingxi felt an overwhelming sense of frustration. He was certain that Zheng Mengni would call him to smooth things over, especially since his anger was written all over his face.
However, after waiting in the bathroom for nearly ten minutes, there wasn't even a single message from her.
With a dark expression and a cold face, Wei Jingxi walked out of the bathroom.
Two seconds later, he turned back and kicked the bathroom door hard.
"Who is it! Are you crazy?"
A boy who had just pulled his pants halfway up jumped in shock, unable to even zip up before shouting angrily at the door.
