The busy tone persisted for a long time, with no one answering. Frustrated, he hung up and redialed.
Wei Jingxi impatiently rummaged through his pockets for a cigarette.
After searching for a long time without finding a cigarette pack, he cursed under his breath, his expression darkening. The busy signal shattered the tension he had been holding onto, and anger surged through him like a tidal wave, filling his mind with a chaotic frustration.
He completely lost track of how many calls he had made; seeing that class was about to start, he shoved his phone back into his pocket and turned back with a scowl. Just as he reached the door, his phone rang urgently, the sound piercing through his thoughts like a sharp drill, shattering Wei Jingxi's composure.
He froze in place, kicked open the door, and hurried back to the rooftop. Upon answering the call, he was immediately met with Wei Nanxuan's furious reprimand.
"Are you out of your mind? Playing such a ridiculous game! You think that by exposing her pregnancy to the media, I’ll force her to have an abortion?"
"Cat got your tongue? Speak!"
Wei Jingxi twitched at the corner of his mouth, a faint smirk playing on his lips.
"It's just a lump of flesh in her belly; getting rid of it would be easy for me. Expose it? You really think too highly of yourself; I don’t have time to play along with you."
Wei Nanxuan roared like thunder: "You scoundrel! She is your stepmother! The child inside her carries your blood! Are you even human?"
Wei Jingxi smiled faintly, his flawless features exuding a chilling aura.
"Oh? I didn’t realize that. I only share half of my blood with you; if you want it so badly, I can give you half back."
"Are you insane? I promised that regardless of whether her child is a boy or girl, the sole heir of Wanxie Consortium will always be you! What more do you want? She’s a woman—a mother! Just because I offered her a place to stay makes you this anxious?"
Wei Jingxi sneered, "Who would believe what you just said?"
In front of the desk, the cold blue light reflected on Zheng Yicheng's stern face as he removed his glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose. The words "illegitimate child" echoed in his mind, along with the name "Wei Family." Zheng Yicheng closed his eyes, a hint of irritation creeping into his usually composed demeanor.
At that moment, his phone on the desk rang incessantly. He tightened his grip on the frame of his glasses and adjusted them back onto his nose. Once he saw the caller ID, Zheng Yicheng's furrowed brows relaxed slightly. What could he possibly want to discuss at this hour?
"Zheng Shu, hello."
On the other end of the line, Tan Yan stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, one hand holding a cigarette as he overlooked the city's skyline. He appeared cold and detached, reminiscent of sunlight hidden behind dark clouds—distant and lonely.
The family had instructed him to take good care of Miss Zheng, and he never expected the Wei Family to stir up such a scandal. Although the child was still in the womb, Wei Nanxuan seemed undeterred by public opinion and insisted on marrying that actress. With their second son due in October, it seemed that the Wei Family would soon need to cultivate another heir.
Everything Tan Yan mentioned had already crossed Zheng Yicheng's mind when he first heard about it. Who in the city didn't know that the sole heir of Wanxie Consortium was an incompetent slacker? It was only because Wei Nanxuan was his only son that he had been reluctantly pushed into that position.

"Yes, that's right," Tan Yan replied after a brief silence, his clear and crisp voice resonating through the phone line.
"I have a suggestion," he said. "How about we change the marriage partner to me?"
"Change to you?" Zheng Yicheng raised an eyebrow, his silence leaving his attitude ambiguous and hard to read.
After a long pause, he responded in a vague tone, "Your marriage partner, I’m afraid your family has already made a choice."
Tan Yan denied it. "Yes, I have always followed their orders, but occasionally I want to do something that stands out."
He extinguished his cigarette and calmly said, "If you ask Wei Nanxuan now, you won’t get the answer you want. As long as he chooses to protect that illegitimate child, the answer is already clear."
"Choose me," he spoke again, this time with much more determination than before.
An incredible thought formed in Zheng Yicheng's mind, but he still chose to ask once more, "Are you doing this because you...?"
Before he could finish the sentence, Tan Yan gently interrupted him. "I want to rise to power quickly." He smiled lightly, as if it were a breeze; after years of hard work, it was time to take a break.
Tan Yan continued, "I need to join forces with the Zheng family to undermine Tan Zheng's influence. From now on, the Tan family will only follow my lead. Once this is accomplished, the marriage will just be a small gesture of goodwill towards you."
Love is a vulnerability; he didn’t want anyone to hold it against him, so he chose a more reasonable and credible excuse instead.
As long as Tan Zheng was in power, he would have no say in his own marriage.
So technically, he wasn’t lying.
Seeing that Zheng Yicheng was still hesitating, Tan Yan casually remarked, "Do we really have to wait until Wei Jingxi is completely out of power for you to make a decision?"
Zheng Yicheng replied seriously, "Give me a few days to think it over. I will give you an answer once I've made up my mind."
