The dishes were just served, and Zheng Mengni's face was pale, her appetite completely gone. It wasn't that she was picky; rather, she had always maintained a very healthy diet to carefully preserve her beautiful appearance. She truly hadn't expected that the food on her plate would be even greasier than what was on the table.
There were snacks prepared by Sun Yao in the car, and she would rather wait and eat them later than indulge in this meal. As Tan Yan picked up his chopsticks, he remarked, "The flavors here are a bit strong. I wasn't sure if you could handle spicy food, so I only ordered half of everything."
"I can manage," Zheng Mengni replied with a forced smile.
"The rain came down so suddenly today; I didn't have time to prepare anything else. Otherwise, I could have driven you somewhere else to eat."
Zheng Mengni said this with a twinge of guilt, "This place is already quite good."
Out of basic politeness, Zheng Mengni never embarrassed others. Even the most unappetizing things could be praised through her honeyed words.
"Then I can relax," Tan Yan said without hesitation as he dove into his meal.
After a while, he swallowed the food in his mouth and slowly looked up. Zheng Mengni noticed the confusion in his eyes and quickly explained before he could ask, "I... I've been on a diet recently, so I'm not very hungry. You go ahead; I'll wait for you."
"Oh, I see." Tan Yan didn't call her out on it but gently reminded her that health should come first.
It felt ironic to talk about health while eating such unhealthy food. Zheng Mengni thought this but managed to respond with a grateful smile on her face, "Got it. Thank you for the reminder."
The rich aroma of the food rushed into Zheng Mengni's nose, but she kept her gaze fixed on the television in front of her. The content being played barely registered in her mind as the enticing smell of meat had already distracted her significantly.
She stole a glance at him. It was somewhat strange; she had only ever seen Tan Yan dressed in a suit, composed and at ease in the center of social gatherings while being toasted by others. She never imagined he could also enjoy himself so casually in a humble eatery, savoring his meal with such delight.
The aroma was enticing.
Zheng Mengni dared not swallow; if Tan Yan discovered that she had been starving and had lied about it, it would be too embarrassing. However, she certainly did not harbor any disdain for this restaurant. After all, everyone has different tastes, and respecting that is essential.
Finally enduring the end of Tan Yan's meal, Zheng Mengni felt a wave of relief wash over her as she escaped from the suffocating atmosphere. If the result of finding the true daughter of the Zheng Family meant living in such a place for a lifetime, she couldn't bear to think about it any longer.
Zheng Mengni had never eaten in a car before, fearing that food crumbs would be left behind and create an unpleasant odor. But her hunger was overwhelming. She pulled out a box of strawberry-flavored milk, inserted a straw, and cradled it in her hands as she took small sips.
Gazing quietly out at the low, dilapidated buildings, her heart felt desolate. Although she had come today to find Xia Shu, she had learned in advance that Ye Bingran's conditions in Wutong Village were even worse than here.
As her emotions swirled within her, Wei Jingxi's video call came through. Upon answering, his face appeared sulky.
Leaning forward, Wei Jingxi asked, "Where have you been?"
"I told you I was volunteering with Fu Yuan. Did you forget?" Zheng Mengni replied softly while holding up her phone, trying to soothe him.
She sounded convincing, even though she had never mentioned it to Wei Jingxi because she knew he would insist on coming along if he found out.
Wei Jingxi wasn't easily fooled; he leaned back with his arms crossed, skepticism written all over his face. "Really?"
"Yes, yes!" Zheng Mengni nodded vigorously. "You really don’t remember? It seems like you don’t care about me at all."
"No way! You're just talking nonsense. If you had told me, do you think I wouldn’t come to keep you company?"
Zheng Mengni’s eyes sparkled as she teased him playfully. "Then why weren’t you paying attention when we were talking? I thought you knew!"
Wei Jingxi seemed genuinely confused now; could it be that he had indeed zoned out?
Tsk.
Wei Nanxuan had recently acted recklessly, bringing that woman and the little bastard in her belly back to the Wei Family. It was all because of the mess at home that he missed the chance to be with Zheng Mengni!
"Then I'll come over; send me your location."
The camera shook slightly as Wei Jingxi stood up and walked outside.
Zheng Mengni replied, "No, no, I'm coming back tomorrow. Besides, it's so far away. It's pouring rain here and traffic is terrible; by the time you get here, it might be past midnight. I’ll probably be asleep by then, and I have to get up early tomorrow."
"You? Traveling this far?" Wei Jingxi paused in his steps.
"Well, it's not exactly..."
"Are you alone?"
As soon as Wei Jingxi finished speaking, Zheng Mengni looked up, her gaze meeting Tan Yan's in the rearview mirror.
She blinked.
