"I actually want to say, your singing is really beautiful," she said softly, especially at the very beginning.
Zheng Mengni found herself enveloped in Tan Yan's embrace, blinking silently. After a moment, her gentle voice quietly broke the stillness. "You... you are..."
She paused, extending her delicate white fingers to sketch a few lines on Tan Yan's chest.
"Recognized me?"
Zheng Mengni hesitated before nodding. She gazed at Tan Yan's warm and profound face, struggling to reconcile the idol she had diligently imitated in the past with the person standing before her now.
Seizing the moment while Zheng Mengni was lost in thought, Tan Yan gently cupped her small face and pressed his lips against hers.
Zheng Mengni's eyes widened in shock, and she pursed her lips, resisting this sudden and inappropriate kiss. She pushed him away forcefully, turning her head so that his kiss landed on her cheek smeared with blood.
Tan Yan calmly wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. He actually had a bit of a cleanliness obsession; physical contact didn’t seem to bother him when it came to Zheng Mengni, but he found other people's blood disgusting.
Watching him wipe his mouth brought an inexplicable sense of relief to Zheng Mengni. It seemed that Tan Yan had just been out of sorts; now that he was back to his senses, he realized that what he did was indeed wrong.
In a soft voice, she reminded him, "I have a fiancé; what you did isn’t appropriate."
Tan Yan chuckled lightly. "So you mean hugging isn’t cheating, but kissing is?"
"Hugging isn’t allowed either."
"But I remember you were the one who hugged me first." Tan Yan sighed dramatically. "Xiao Ni, I feel so wronged."
Zheng Mengni whispered, "I was just too scared."
Tan Yan raised his hand and stroked his lips with his thumb, as if savoring something. "Neither hugging nor kissing counts as cheating."
"Xiao Ni," he continued gently, "you should know better than I do that you and Wei Jingxi can’t possibly get engaged now."
No matter whether Zheng Yicheng would acknowledge you as his daughter after knowing the truth, at this moment, you didn't want to disappoint him for the sake of a man. Every word he spoke was something Zheng Mengni couldn't help but accept.
Zheng Mengni was momentarily taken aback. "Why are you telling me all this?"
Tan Yan paused for a moment before chuckling softly. As the light from his phone screen illuminated their surroundings, he tucked a stray hair behind Zheng Mengni's ear.
In her clear eyes, he saw his unmasked desire reflected back at him. He pressed his lips to her forehead, his voice hoarse, breathing hotly against her skin as if trying to melt her away.
"Xiao Ni, I like you. The first time I heard you sing, I didn't even know you were Zheng Mengni, yet I had already fallen for you. No matter what your identity is, I don't want you to feel any fear or anxiety."
"If your last name is Zheng, I'll stay by your side. If it's not, I'll help you hide all the secrets that can't see the light of day."
Zheng Mengni bit her lip, her emotions in turmoil, unable to respond to this ambiguous feeling that was hard to decipher.
Tan Yan reached out, but she instinctively turned her face away.
A hurried laugh escaped him as he used his finger to hook the necklace hanging around her neck. The delicate chain held a diamond ring, an exquisite shade of pink that was so beautiful it was hard to look away.
Tan Yan's voice flowed gently, "Can you return it to him? If you like it, I can buy you something even better."
Zheng Mengni held her breath. "If Dad insists on canceling the engagement, I'll return it to him. I can't accept such an expensive gift."
"Fool." Tan Yan ruffled her soft hair, his tone warm and gentle. "It's not that you can't accept it; it's that you're worth something better."
"But there's one thing I need to confess: on the day of the auction, I also bid for this diamond ring but had to let it go due to various circumstances. That experience made me realize something—liking someone means you don't want to part with them."
"So that might have been my last chance to let him have it; from now on, everything about you will be mine alone."
Zheng Mengni's gaze turned vacant as she thought:
"You and I truly share the same plight. Are we destined to be abandoned?"
Zheng Mengni pulled the necklace back from Tan Yan's hand and tucked it into her collar, letting it slide back to her chest.
With a gentle smile, she said, "I'll keep it safe for now before returning it to him. It's too valuable for me to lose."
Tan Yan indulgently replied, "If you really like that ring, I can go find Wei Jingxi and buy it for you."
Zheng Mengni fell silent. A strange premonition washed over her; she felt that Wei Jingxi would never sell it.
