In the hotel room, Zheng Mengni had already taken a bath and emerged wrapped in a towel, her skin glistening with droplets of water. The high temperature of the water had left a faint blush on her cheeks that hadn't fully faded.
Standing at the foot of the bed, she spread out her exam papers, exercises, and draft sheets in disarray. She lay down on them, curling up her body, imagining herself as a thin piece of paper blending into the chaos. If only she could copy and paste, she wished all this knowledge could be transferred directly into her mind.
As she drifted into a light sleep, casting aside all her worries from the real world, she remained aware enough to hear the door open. Zheng Mengni was already irritated by people who were late; her mood had soured, and Gao Lei had unfortunately walked right into it.
She stayed still on the bed, contemplating how to punish him later. The footsteps were light and slow, carrying an air of nonchalance. As she opened her eyes, she instinctively pulled the towel tighter around herself.
Indeed, the face before her was familiar but not the one she had been waiting for. Tan Yan did not approach her; instead, he casually pulled out a chair and sat down.
Tan Yan was exceptionally skilled at disguising his emotions; any feelings that might be detrimental to him were never revealed in public. So even now, seeing Zheng Mengni defenseless and wrapped in a towel on the bed, his gaze remained soft.
"Can you really sleep comfortably with all these papers scattered on your bed?" he remarked with a smile, but Zheng Mengni offered no response.
"This is my room; what business do you have here?"
Tan Yan's expression was gentle as he replied, "Your friend Gao Lei asked me to find you since we know each other. He wanted me to take care of something for him."
Zheng Mengni pressed her lips together in silence. Whatever Gao Lei wanted would only mean trouble caused by Tan Yan. It seemed that Tan Yan had forced Gao Lei to spill everything.
Zheng Mengni got out of bed and slowly approached Tan Yan. She was confused, wondering what he wanted from her, as she had no idea.
Tan Yan lifted his gaze slightly to look at her. "Your interests are quite unique; I find them rather charming."
Zheng Mengni replied softly, "Is it the hobby of doing homework in a hotel?" Perhaps it was.
Tan Yan chose not to contradict her.
Zheng Mengni said lightly, "I can manage on my own. Your time is precious; it’s better not to waste it on me."
"But I think it's necessary to spend more time on you," Tan Yan replied sincerely, gazing at her. The tenderness in his eyes gradually faded as he faced Zheng Mengni with a seriousness he had never shown before.
"Xiao Ni, if you enjoy playing, I can accompany you, no matter what we do. There are places you shouldn't go and people you shouldn't touch. That night at Di Jing Yu Ting, many were implicated when the place was raided. Some matters aren't as simple as you imagine. If there's someone you want to teach a lesson to or someone you dislike, just tell me; I'll handle it."
As Tan Yan spoke, Zheng Mengni frowned without hiding her feelings. He seemed to sense something and chose to remain silent.
"I do dislike someone," Zheng Mengni bit her lip, seriously contemplating the issue. A bright smile broke across her face, her eyes sparkling like glass beads with a hint of mischief. "Can you help me deal with them?"
Tan Yan responded with a soft "mm."
Zheng Mengni leaned in slightly closer and said, "Actually, I really dislike you."
As soon as the words left her mouth, the gentlemanly smile vanished from Tan Yan's face, and his expression shifted rapidly. After searching for the right way to respond for a long time, his voice came out with an incredulous rasp. "What did you say?"
