Ye Bingran lived in a top-floor apartment with a staircase. When she opened the door, Zheng Mengni's small face clearly scrunched up; the living room was barely a third the size of her own dressing room.
Ye Siqian looked at the newly refreshed room and was pleasantly surprised, quietly giving Ye Bingran an admiring glance. The room, neatly organized by Ye Bingran, was a stark contrast to the mess it had been when they came to view it. Ye Siqian felt a bit of his self-doubt lessen.
He led Zheng Mengni on a tour, explaining, "The lights are broken, and the TV is also out of order; repairs will cost extra. My sister said it’s unnecessary; she can fix it herself and change the light bulbs. The bed boards in both bedrooms were broken; my sister repaired one, and the other bed is new, specifically saved for you."
Zheng Mengni remained silent for a while. She glanced at Ye Bingran, who was busy moving her luggage, feeling an indescribable emotion within her—something like jealousy but not quite.
But how could he do everything?
As this dark thought flashed by, Zheng Mengni focused on a key point: Are there only two bedrooms?
Ye Siqian awkwardly replied, "It's hard to find rental places here; there are many single rooms. My sister put in a lot of effort to find this two-bedroom apartment and went to many places. The summer sun is really strong; look at him—he's getting darker by the day, haha."
Ye Bingran ignored Ye Siqian, the cheeky little brat who loved to talk back, not even bothering to give him a glance.
Zheng Mengni opened her bag and took out a small, exquisite bottle, walking over to Ye Bingran and handing it to him. With her rosy cheeks glowing with a sweet smile, she said, "This sunscreen is really effective; if you keep applying it, you should be able to get your color back."
Ye Bingran did not take it. "Thanks, but your room is on the right."
Zheng Mengni retracted her hand and replied softly, "Okay."
Ye Siqian immediately wanted to follow her.
Ye Bingran blocked his path. Despite being shorter than him by quite a bit, her cold and indifferent gaze inexplicably carried an air of superiority that pressured him.
"Sister?? You’re sleeping on the sofa," Ye Bingran stated firmly.
"What?! But my back hurts; sleeping on the sofa will—"
"Do you not understand that men and women should keep their distance? Do you want to squeeze into one room with her?"
Ye Siqian felt wronged; even if he had ulterior motives, he lacked the courage. Moreover, he could guarantee he had no such intentions—he just wanted to drop off his things in Zheng Mengni's adjacent bedroom after sitting in the car all day; he was exhausted.
The rooms were small and lacked soundproofing. Afraid of being misunderstood by Zheng Mengni, Ye Siqian quickly explained, "I’m not! I’m going back to my own room. You bought such a big bed; isn’t it meant for you and Sister Nini to share?"
Zheng Mengni poked her head out at the sound, her clear black eyes fixed intently on Ye Bingran.
"Come in, the sofa is too small anyway."
She wasn't concerned about Ye Siqian; she was seizing the opportunity to keep a close watch on Ye Bingran.
Ye Bingran lowered his gaze, ignoring her, and repeated firmly, "You sleep on the sofa."
After spending so much time together, Ye Siqian could easily tell whether Ye Bingran was angry or not.
He felt a genuine sense of apprehension and dared not defy her again. He smiled at Zheng Mengni, saying, "No, the living room is cooler; there's a fan."
However, not long after he spoke, Ye Bingran brought the only fan into Zheng Mengni's room.
After taking a shower, Zheng Mengni knocked on Ye Bingran's door.
"Come here."
Ye Bingran followed her inside, confused about what was happening.
Zheng Mengni moved a chair to the side of the bed for him to sit. As he sat down, he scrutinized her with an intense gaze as if trying to see through her.
Zheng Mengni pulled out a small jar from her pink bag. This time, she didn't hand it to Ye Bingran; instead, she twisted off the lid and scooped out a dollop of cream-colored ointment.
She cupped Ye Bingran's face in her hands, but he turned his head away warily, avoiding her delicate touch.
He glanced at the pink bag—was it a treasure chest? It seemed to contain everything.
Zheng Mengni chuckled softly. "Don't be afraid; it won't hurt. This is a scar removal ointment. If you use it consistently, it can lighten the mark on your forehead. Since the scar is close to the brain nerves, it's not advisable to undergo plastic surgery just yet. You can start with this ointment."
As she finished speaking, she held his chin firmly to prevent him from moving and gently applied the cool ointment to his scar.
