In the past, no matter what Zheng Mengni offered him, he would always accept her gifts with hands outstretched in sincere gratitude. This was Gao Lei's way of showing her respect and admiration.
But now, he kept his right hand resting on his knee, anxiety hidden beneath the table. He vividly remembered the day of the interview when the manager had stared at his hand with a look of shock and disgust.
"Forget it, you should just stay in the back kitchen. What if the customers see that hand and can't eat?"
Gao Lei hung his head low. The restaurant was bright as day, yet he felt enveloped in shadows, his gaze dim and desolate. Zheng Mengni ordered a lot of dishes, leaning back slightly in her chair as she listened to Shen Die speak, inadvertently revealing a sweet smile that made her all the more captivating.
Gao Lei stole glances at her from the corner of his eye, but each time he dared to look, it was only for a fleeting second before he quickly averted his gaze. How could he allow himself to cast such an impolite stare upon Zheng Mengni now?
Did he hate her? Did he hate that lunatic who had chopped off one of his fingers?
Gao Lei did feel hatred. But when he thought about someone as unattainable as Tan Yan, who could lose his mind over unrequited love and vent his frustrations on an insignificant person like him, Gao Lei found a sense of relief.
See? Even if you are Tan Yan, what does it matter? You can only rage helplessly. Yet he—at least he had once possessed Zheng Mengni's most genuine smile.
It was for Zheng Mengni that he had opened up his heart. But so what? Did happiness need to be questioned? That was the unique joy he had given to Zheng Mengni.
Could Tan Yan provide that? Would someone so proud and arrogant ever willingly kneel at the feet of the girl he liked, begging for pity?
"Why don't you take a look?"
Gao Lei was jolted back to reality by Shen Die's sudden question, unaware that his reaction only made him appear more contemptible in Shen Die's eyes. Shen Die was puzzled; what could Xiao Ni possibly see in this dull-witted country bumpkin?
Zheng Mengni gazed at him with a gentle smile. "Yes, Gao Lei, let's see if you like it first."
His words were something he would always obey without question. Without any hesitation, Gao Lei clumsily tried to unwrap the package with his left hand. It was incredibly difficult, and soon he was sweating profusely, his face turning increasingly red.
Across from him, two pairs of eyes fell upon him—one gentle, the other indifferent—neither showing any intention to help. Gao Lei was reluctant to reveal his damaged right hand; he feared being looked down upon. Deep down, he knew that someone as kind and gentle as Zheng Mengni wouldn't care about such things. In fact, she would likely feel sympathy and pity for him.
However, he didn't want to resort to using his injury to gain Zheng Mengni's attention; that felt too despicable.
"I... I’ll take it home to unwrap," he murmured softly. Carefully, he placed the gift on the chair and turned his face away from Zheng Mengni's probing gaze.
Zheng Mengni couldn't help but smile helplessly. Oh dear, what a little fool he was. She had come here specifically to seek justice for Gao Lei. This silly boy was still trying to hide things from her.
Did he really think that Tan Yan would feel guilty for his wrongdoings just because he acted coy? How ridiculous.
One must consider the circumstances when dealing with others. Tan Yan had been allowed to secretly ruin her toys; regardless of whether they were her favorite ones or not, such behavior was already crossing the line.
