In the late night, Wei Jingxi drove Zheng Mengni home. His hands gripped the steering wheel tightly, as if he needed to hold onto something to find peace of mind.
After a long silence, he asked, "Are we considered reconciled?"
The smile on Zheng Mengni's lips froze, but the tenderness in her eyes remained unchanged. In her memory, the times they had argued were few and far between; hadn’t they always been fine? Even their mutual friends were ones she had deleted from his contacts.
Wei Jingxi defended himself softly, "I just accidentally clicked wrong."
Noticing that Zheng Mengni was changing the subject, he felt a bit wronged, his eyes reddening. "You know my question wasn't meant that way."
Zheng Mengni turned her head slightly, her gaze filled with affection. "Then you should show me your best side."
Wei Jingxi felt a bit anxious. "Isn’t it enough?" If there had to be a standard for choosing a partner, it seemed too rigid. Zheng Mengni looked ahead, her expression serious and determined. Besides, wasn’t this a time for love and romance?
Wei Jingxi hesitated and nodded, as if he understood. "I know."
Zheng Mengni continued, "If you don’t work hard, you’ll just have to wait for others to choose you." She chuckled softly and added, "If you want to choose me, at least be strong enough to win my heart."
Wei Jingxi pondered for a moment. "So what type of person do you like? You have to give me a goal to strive for."
Without thinking twice, Zheng Mengni replied, "I like learning."
Wei Jingxi quickly interrupted her. "Don’t say you like those with good grades. I was foolish enough to believe that before; wearing glasses and pretending to be studious didn’t make you look at me any differently."
Zheng Mengni couldn’t help but laugh. "Aren't glasses just an accessory? I thought you were just trying to look cool."
"Do you think it’s cool?" Wei Jingxi's eyes lit up with a hint of excitement in his heart.
"Hahaha," Zheng Mengni laughed.
Wei Jingxi’s face turned pale as he muttered softly, "I know it’s silly; don’t laugh at me." He continued, "Of course, the fake can never be real. But I also don’t see you being particularly fond of those true scholars."
He was well aware of who those true scholars were; he didn’t want to mention them and found them tiresome—obsessed with studying to the point of madness, with nothing else to do but undermine others. Each one more despicable than the last.
Zheng Mengni's eyes sparkled innocently as she clarified, "What I mean is that at least in the areas you love and excel in, you should shine brightly enough for me to see and admire."
I am quite vain, don’t you know? If you’re not impressive enough, I’ll be laughed at by the other wives after we get married. With no luck and no skills, I won’t be able to marry a good man.
Wei Jingxi tried to correct her thinking: You’re already impressive; who would dare laugh at you?
Zheng Mengni scoffed, “That’s like playing music to a cow.”
What’s that supposed to mean?
The conversation abruptly halted as Wei Jingxi suddenly realized, his expression shifting to one of excitement, his handsome face revealing unrestrained joy. “Are you giving me a chance?”
Zheng Mengni feigned ignorance, “What did I say?”
Training a qualified partner can indeed be troublesome. For her, love wasn’t a necessity; at most, it was just a seasoning.
It wasn’t that the sunk cost made Zheng Mengni reluctant to give up on Wei Jingxi; she simply found him easier to manage and more obedient.
Wei Jingxi turned to look at her, satisfaction radiating from his smile. “I don’t care; you’ve agreed to give me a chance!”
Zheng Mengni pushed his face away with her hand. “Focus on driving; watch the road.”
Wei Jingxi grinned widely. “Understood! From now on, I will never speed, never run a red light, and always yield to pedestrians!”
Zheng Mengni’s mouth fell slightly open in shock, her pretty face displaying disbelief. “You haven’t even finished deducting points from your license yet; it’s still valid.”
Wei Jingxi wouldn’t dare share those glorious tales with Zheng Mengni. He obediently fell silent and concentrated on driving, feeling a bit anxious that he might have let something slip in his excitement, fearing she would think he drove too recklessly.
The luxury car stopped in front of the villa. Just as Zheng Mengni was about to unbuckle her seatbelt, Wei Jingxi reached over and pressed the button for her, whispering, “Let me do it.”
Zheng Mengni placed her hand on her bag instead of the buckle, allowing him to take his time. Her eyes sparkled with curiosity and amusement.
Zheng Mengni teased him deliberately, “I don’t really like clumsy people; it seems like they can’t handle any emotions properly…”
Before she could finish her sentence, the seatbelt was released.
Wei Jingxi lifted his eyelids and shifted his gaze slightly. “I just wanted to spend a little more time with you.”
I haven't left.
"Do you want to kiss?" As he spoke, he instinctively leaned forward, maintaining a comfortable distance that wouldn’t make Zheng Mengni feel uneasy.
Zheng Mengni's lively eyes sparkled with amusement as she asked in confusion, "You've been kissing for a day now, aren't you tired of it?"
"It’s only been half a day," Wei Jingxi corrected her, only to realize the serious problem that lay beneath. He stared blankly at Zheng Mengni, his eyes filled with shock and bewilderment.
He felt as if the sky had fallen.
The novelty shouldn’t have worn off so quickly. Was it really possible to get tired of it in just one day?
He forced himself to calm down. Regardless of what Zheng Mengni thought, he needed her to understand his feelings.
"I won’t get tired of you. Believe it or not, from the past until now, you are the only one I’ve ever been moved by."
"I admit I’ve done many foolish things that annoyed you, but Xiao Ni, I will change."
"You don’t need to rush to agree or refuse. When you truly believe I’ve changed, I’ll ask you again."
He didn’t turn on the lights; the interior of the car was dim, but his eyes were clear.
Wei Jingxi could see his own anxious and unsettled reflection in Zheng Mengni's bright and clear gaze. He had never found breathing so difficult before; forming complete sentences felt like an exhausting task.
He wasn’t good with sweet words and didn’t know how to make girls happy. Whatever was good, he would buy it for Xiao Ni.
He no longer pitied himself; more often than not, he considered Xiao Ni’s feelings instead.
To put it bluntly, when he first discovered her imperfections, he felt relieved.
The person who had always seemed so distant also had flaws.
It made him feel that Zheng Mengni was no longer so unattainable, giving him the courage to approach her, even if he was clumsy and used the wrong methods.
He no longer took pleasure in Xiao Ni’s darker sides.
No matter what she was like, he accepted her and sincerely hoped she could move forward.
No matter how far he goes, how fast he runs, or how high he climbs, he will not allow himself to be left behind by Zheng Mengni. Hearing this, Zheng Mengni smiled gently and said, "Then you better keep up."
