Wei Jingxi's heart skipped a beat, and he quickly replied, "Of course." However, his face paled slightly as a hint of confusion and jealousy began to spread within him.
Xiao Ni thought, When did I get a younger brother? Where did he come from? He felt uneasy but had no way to immediately return home to clarify the situation. Guessing blindly wouldn’t help; he absolutely did not want to misunderstand Zheng Mengni over such trivial matters.
Unable to hide his thoughts any longer, Wei Jingxi cautiously asked, "Xiao Ni, is he your biological brother?"
Zheng Mengni's voice was soft as she replied, "His surname is Ye, Ye Siqian. I’m not sure if he’s really my brother; I can’t just believe everything he says."
Wei Jingxi let out a sigh of relief but then felt a weight in his chest. Fortunately, it seemed Xiao Ni didn’t trust this brother too much. But still, he thought, how could you help someone whose background you know nothing about?
Wei Jingxi pressed his lips together, feeling somewhat stifled. His expression was far from the calmness in his tone. After all, Xiao Ni couldn’t see him; he had been pretending to be the good boy for so long that it was starting to drive him a little mad. A proper break wouldn’t be a bad thing.
He could only reassure himself that helping Xiao Ni was a good deed, and he should be happy for her.
Zheng Mengni patiently explained, "Ye Bingran's younger brother passed away on my birthday. This child, Ye Siqian, is all alone; I can’t just leave him to fend for himself."
The first half of what Zheng Mengni said was true; the second half was not. Once she discovered the truth behind her curiosity, Ye Siqian could go wherever he pleased. He was an adult with hands and feet who could take care of himself. If he were her biological brother, she certainly wouldn’t support him for life.
Finally, Zheng Mengni’s gentle words eased Wei Jingxi's anxious heart, and he couldn’t help but smile in relief.
With a somewhat insincere demeanor, Wei Jingxi said, "So that’s how it is; he really is pitiful. Xiao Ni, don’t worry about it. Just leave him to me; I’ll arrange for servants to take good care of him."
"Thank you."
"Please don’t say thank you," Wei Jingxi couldn't help but snap back, feeling a pang in his heart. He disliked how distant Xiao Ni sounded when speaking to him.
"No good," Wei Jingxi asked in a low voice, "Why?"
Zheng Mengni casually replied, "I don’t want to be rude like you."
Wei Jingxi, who always tried to be polite, feared that Xiao Ni might dislike him. So, he elongated his voice and sweetly whined.
Zheng Mengni encouraged him, "You can do it! I look forward to your performance."
"Thank you, Teacher Zheng, for your guidance. I will keep it in mind at all times," he replied earnestly.
If he were in front of Zheng Mengni, Wei Jingxi would definitely bow at a perfect ninety-degree angle to show that he could be polite too.
Zheng Mengni smiled brightly and said, "Well, I’ll hang up now. Goodbye."
"Wait, Xiao Ni—" He hadn’t finished his sentence when the call was abruptly ended. When Zheng Mengni said that, she wasn’t seeking Wei Jingxi’s opinion; she was merely informing him that the conversation was over.
Wei Jingxi sulked as he held his phone tightly. He hadn’t even wished her a happy birthday yet. That day, he had only sent a short message, but cold words on a screen lacked the warmth of spoken words.
