The Guan Family estate is nestled in the heart of the mountains, appearing understated yet every brick and tile within is of considerable value, a rarity that money cannot easily buy.
Upon entering the main gate, the driver navigated through the grounds for quite some time before reaching the main building. This location serves as the venue for banquets, meals, and receiving guests, as well as the residence of the head of the family, Guan Li, and his immediate family. It is equipped with the finest nutritionists, medical staff, drivers, and bodyguards to cater to Guan Li's every need.
Guan Su Lin, the youngest and most favored son of Guan Li, also has his room arranged here. The other concubines reside in a separate part of the estate. While it may seem that everything is peaceful on the surface, there are undercurrents of tension and intrigue lurking beneath.
Typically, members of the Guan Family do not gather here unless there is an important matter at hand. Today is an exception; with the return of the youngest son, a grand occasion is expected.
Guan Su Lin walked up the steps slowly with Zheng Mengni by his side as the driver pressed the bell. The door opened to reveal a calm and composed face belonging to a capable woman with short hair. She appeared well-maintained, her true age indiscernible.
Zheng Mengni assumed she was one of the concubines and upon entering, Guan Su Lin seized her arm for a moment when no one was watching and whispered, "Her name is... she’s the housekeeper who has been with my father for nearly twelve years."
Zheng Mengni guessed correctly that this woman was a candidate among those vying for a higher position among the concubines; she blinked in surprise and softly exclaimed, "Oh."
Guan Su Lin tightened his grip on her arm and began to laugh at her dazed expression. He advised her on what to do: "When I call out to people later, just follow my lead and you won't make any mistakes."
Zheng Mengni whispered back, "Should I call him... Dad?"
"You have a sweet tongue; whatever you call him will please him," he replied, implying that it didn’t matter much as long as it wasn’t too outrageous.
Guan Su Lin's introductions would primarily involve key figures within the household to Zheng Mengni. As for what she chose to say, he trusted her judgment not to go astray. Even if something went awry, he would be there to cover for her.
Thus, she could relax—eat when hungry and drink when thirsty—without holding back.
As they strolled leisurely through the estate, Guan Su Lin held onto Zheng Mengni’s hand while introducing her to the landscape design within the grounds. Meanwhile, ahead of them, servants hurriedly relayed news of Guan Su Lin's return to the main hall.
"Sir, young master has returned!"
"Master, Young Master has entered the house!"
The voice filled with surprise and excitement echoed through the hall, causing the servants to hasten their movements. Those serving dishes were busy plating, while others poured tea, all the preparations proceeding in an orderly manner.
Squatting by Guan Li's feet, a servant meticulously arranged the blanket draped over his legs, a genuine smile flickering across his calm face.
"Master, congratulations on finally having him back."
Guan Li, aged and ailing, felt a rare clarity in his murky eyes upon hearing such good news. He grunted softly and looked towards the door, his anticipation palpable.
In the spacious hall, he was the only one eagerly awaiting Guan Su Lin's arrival. The others, harboring ulterior motives, discreetly assessed the old man's expression.
After a few seconds of feigned joy, they joined in the congratulatory chorus, pretending to genuinely look forward to the return of the younger brother.
Guan Qingmo couldn't even be bothered to act; he lounged next to Tan Yan playing video games, his feet resting on Tan Yan's knees as he pretended to be engrossed in the game, occasionally kicking out in frustration.
Guan Miao showed little enthusiasm about her uncle's return either. Every time she saw Guan Su Lin, she couldn't help but tremble. Although her brother was not malicious, she feared her charming uncle even more.
Talking to him felt like being ensnared by a venomous snake as it coiled around her, its cold tongue licking her skin, sending chills of panic down her spine.
