She was both bait and hostage. Guan Su Lin, under the guise of pretending to be a lover, was actually forcing Tan Yan to reveal his true self and his vulnerabilities. Guan Su Lin was not foolish; he could see how deeply Tan Yan cared for her and knew he wouldn't easily give her up. That was why he started with Zheng Mengni, sowing discord to sever her bond with Tan Yan, leaving her with no choice but to rely on him.
With her thoughts sorted out, Zheng Mengni curled her lips into a faint smile. It seemed that Guan Su Lin had miscalculated. She would stand by whoever held more value.
Tan Yan's room was on the same floor as theirs but farther away. The corridor was particularly quiet as Zheng Mengni put on her coat and approached his door, which was tightly shut and silent. She tried turning the doorknob and managed to open it slightly; perhaps due to seeing her message, Tan Yan hadn't locked it.
The room was pitch black, but unexpectedly, a faint blue light emanated from the bathroom, accompanied by the sound of water trickling. Zheng Mengni did not move forward any further; instead, she turned on a floor lamp and quietly sat on the sofa, waiting. To visit uninvited was already an intrusion, especially at such an inopportune time.
After waiting for a long time, Zheng Mengni was on the verge of falling asleep, yet Tan Yan still hadn’t come out. The sound of water in the bathroom had long ceased.
Zheng Mengni stood up and took a few steps forward, calling out Tan Yan's name. They had clearly agreed beforehand that she would come. Feeling somewhat displeased, she furrowed her brows. Her patience was wearing thin; she had come to confront him, and there was no reason for her to wait for him.
Decisively, she pushed open the bathroom door.
Tan Yan was enveloped in steam, the fragrant, humid air wafting towards her. He had only partially put on his sleepwear, his dark hair tousled aside, revealing his handsome face. Glimmering droplets of water trickled down from his jawline, neck, and collarbone. His complexion was flushed lightly from the heat and the alcohol he had consumed.
His breathing was somewhat heavy and irregular. Through the thick haze of steam, Tan Yan opened his half-closed eyes to look at Zheng Mengni, his gaze slightly dazed and unfocused.
"Why didn’t you say anything? I called for you several times outside," Zheng Mengni replied, meeting his gaze and justifying her boldness with a reasonable excuse.
Tan Yan finished putting on his sleepwear and said softly, "Sorry, I didn’t hear you."
As he stepped closer to her, he lowered his eyelids slightly, his gentle gaze filled with curiosity and contemplation.
"Is there something urgent that brought you here so late?"
Zheng Mengni stepped aside to let him pass. "You can talk outside; it’s hot in here."
