The ward was bright, with the curtains fully drawn back, allowing the vibrant sunlight to pour in. Yet, despite the warmth outside, an eerie chill lingered within the room.
The moment Zheng Mengni stepped inside, Guan Su Lin strode forward and grasped her hand tightly, his eyes brimming with a mix of joy and concern at their reunion.
"I'm sorry, Zheng Zheng. It's my fault for not being by your side. You've suffered."
He pulled her into an embrace that felt increasingly constricting, but Zheng Mengni found no warmth in his body. Guan Su Lin was cold all over, an unfathomable chill emanating from him. From Ye Bing's perspective, his pale, handsome face appeared especially twisted and sinister, devoid of any warmth or affection.
On the hospital bed, Guan Li hoarsely called out for Zheng Mengni. Reluctantly, Guan Su Lin released her from his hold but kept her hand firmly clasped in his as he turned to approach Guan Li's bedside.
Guan Li first expressed his gratitude to Ye Bing, who dismissed it lightly as a trivial matter.
After exchanging a few pleasantries, Guan Li suddenly said, "You all should step outside."
Zheng Mengni nodded and turned to leave, but Guan Li added, "You stay."
He then instructed Guan Su Lin to step out and bring in the lawyer.
Guan Su Lin's calm demeanor faltered slightly; his gaze shifted as if he couldn't believe what he had just heard.
Guan Li sent him away but kept Zheng Mengni by his side.
"Father, you're not well. How can I leave at a time like this?" Guan Su Lin's gentle smile returned, and the ambition that once flickered in his sharp eyes seemed to vanish.
Guan Li simply replied, "You go out first."
After saying this, he closed his eyes briefly, fatigue etched across his features.
Guan Su Lin smiled slowly and began to retreat until he reached the door of the ward before turning back.
He gritted his teeth and smiled softly. "Alright."
Once his gaze fell on Zheng Mengni again, the smile vanished completely. He looked at his fiancée with a cold and piercing calmness.
Zheng Mengni pretended not to notice the chilling glare directed at her and maintained a composed demeanor as she focused on Guan Li lying in bed.
Just then, Ye Bing turned and stepped forward, blocking Guan Su Lin's path with an impassive expression that shielded him from any malice. He said flatly, "Let's go."
After Guan Su Lin and Ye Bing left, the lawyer entered with a witness in tow.
Guan Li looked at Zheng Mengni with a calm and kind expression. "Come here."
I’ve made a fool of myself, thinking I was great, that everyone feared, respected, and revered me. Yet in the end, I cannot even manage my own wife and children. I watch helplessly as they fight among themselves, each trying to destroy the other.
Zheng Mengni quietly stayed by his side, listening intently. Her silence was the best response she could offer.
Guan Li sighed, lacking even the strength to express his frustration. “After I die, they will lose all restraint and likely become even more reckless. I don’t want such a situation to unfold. Lin Er is a pitiful child; I always wanted to do my best to make it up to him, but I was terribly wrong and led him astray.”
Even so, I still cannot bear to part with this child. He has my temperament and looks like his mother. To be honest, he is my most cherished child. I do not want to see him continue to harm his siblings or engage in fratricide. So, Miss Zheng, I hope you can help me; this is the last thing a father can do for his child.
Zheng Mengni gazed at Guan Li. “Sir, you are an intelligent man; how could you not see the clues surrounding this kidnapping? If possible, I genuinely want to help you because helping you also means helping A Lin. However, A Lin may not listen to me.”
Guan Li chuckled softly. “No, it’s you who fail to see the clues. From the beginning until now, he has shown nothing but a thirst for power and no genuine feelings—except for you. But those involved are often blinded by their own perspectives; it’s you and him who are unaware of the truth.”
Zheng Mengni was momentarily taken aback.
Guan Su Lin’s sincerity? How could that be?
Guan Su Lin had only ever sought to use her; she silently tucked away her thoughts and continued to play her role earnestly in this drama.
