The desire to study hard continued throughout Zheng Mengni's high school years. During this time, Ye Bing was always present at her parents' meetings, and whenever her essays touched on themes of family, it was only Ye Bing who attended. Her way of addressing him changed from "Uncle" to "Xiao Ye Ge," and her essay titles evolved from "My Uncle" to "My Brother."
However, studying had always been Zheng Mengni's weak point, and she often found herself hiding away in tears over her unsatisfactory grades. Sometimes, when Ye Bing discovered her distress, he would take her out for a shopping spree without hesitation. Aside from that, he took care of everything else.
Zheng Mengni never expected that the plotlines from idol dramas would play out in her own life. Ye Bing's intentions were both noble and questionable; she understood little about it all and often felt confused. She only knew that Xiao Ye Ge was involved in dangerous activities because he had mentioned wanting to make a lot of money. Yet, she didn't want him to take risks; she believed that being alive and healthy was enough.
Sometimes, she even doubted whether her own greed for money was the reason Xiao Ye Ge felt compelled to engage in such perilous ventures and associate with dangerous people. If that were the case, she would rather be a poor nobody than put Ye Bing at risk. He and Yao Yao were her only family, and she didn't want to lose either of them.
Determined, Zheng Mengni began to pull out all the gifts that Ye Bing had bought for her—most of which were as good as new—and sold them online. After all the support Xiao Ye Ge had given her over the years, she wanted to learn how to earn money for herself.
With a sense of satisfaction, Zheng Mengni chatted with people online, mimicking Ye Bing's style and feeling quite adept at it.
"Ye Ge," called an assistant, raising his voice slightly, trembling with disbelief at what he saw.
Ye Bing did not look up from his work as he reviewed documents. "If there's something to discuss, just say it," he replied calmly.
"How did the necklace you took a picture of last week end up for sale online?"
"You bought it for eight hundred million, and now it's being sold for two hundred thousand?"
"I thought you gave it to Miss Zheng as a gift. How could it appear on a second-hand trading platform?"
The assistant's voice grew weaker with each word. Ye Bing had expected something serious and was somewhat displeased with the assistant's panicked demeanor.
He remained calm. "It's just a toy I gave her. Maybe she got tired of it and decided to sell it. The girl even knows to give me something back; isn't that a sign of thriftiness?"
"Give back?!" The assistant's lips twitched. "That's a huge loss!"
"It's a one-of-a-kind collectible, not something that circulates in the market. Even if someone wanted to get it at an auction, they would need some influence to qualify for bidding."
"Alright, enough chatter. If you have time to gossip, you might as well handle your own tasks properly," Ye Bing said.
The assistant nodded respectfully. "Understood."
Just as he was about to leave, Ye Bing suddenly added, "Wait, keep an eye out for any beautiful jewelry recently. It would be best to change up the style so she doesn't get bored with what she has."
The assistant quickly agreed, secretly grumbling to himself: "Even if you're rich, this isn't how you should spend money."
But then again, it's hard to put a price on what makes him happy. The young master didn't have many interests, and making girls happy was one of the few things he enjoyed; as a subordinate, he couldn't dampen his spirits.
In the evening, Zheng Mengni was in high spirits from her sales. She excitedly transferred the money she received from selling the gift to Ye Bing and left a message saying, "Xiao Ye Ge, you've worked hard!"
"Indeed," Ye Bing replied without accepting the payment. He added a zero to the end of Zheng Mengni's transfer amount and sent back the excess money.
Zheng Mengni stared at her screen in surprise, her eyes wide open. Ye Bing watched the screen with a slight smile curling at his lips.
Indeed, he had to work a bit harder; otherwise, given Zheng Mengni's tendency to squander money, it was only a matter of time before he would be drained dry. To prevent such a situation from occurring, he needed to put in more effort.
