In the growth years of Xiao Haochen, his student life was a difficult journey in pursuit of his dreams. The dilapidated classroom was not arranged neatly, and the weathered blackboard bore the marks of time. Yet, Xiao Haochen paid no attention to these; his eyes were solely focused on the dense knowledge within the textbooks.
In the early morning, before the first rays of sunlight had fully penetrated the clouds, Xiao Haochen arrived at school. The classroom was empty, and he opened the windows to let in the fresh air before quickly sitting down to begin his morning reading. His voice was clear and firm, echoing throughout the room. During breaks, while his classmates laughed and played or chatted in the corridors, Xiao Haochen remained seated, either reviewing what had been taught in the previous class or preparing for the next lesson. His pen moved continuously across the pages of his notebook, jotting down key points, and whenever he encountered something he didn’t understand, his brow would furrow tightly.
His deskmate Li Yang watched him work so hard and couldn’t help but advise, “Haochen, don’t tire yourself out so much; take a break.”
Xiao Haochen looked up, determination shining in his eyes. “I can’t do that, Li Yang. I know my circumstances are tough; I have to work even harder if I want to change my fate.”
Li Yang shook his head helplessly. “You’re pushing yourself so hard, but sometimes effort doesn’t guarantee results.”
Xiao Haochen smiled confidently. “Without effort, there will definitely be no reward. I believe that as long as I keep going, I will eventually reap the benefits.”
However, the path of learning was fraught with thorns. As the courses progressed, more and more study materials were required, which put a strain on his already struggling family. Once, when a teacher recommended an important guidebook that all the students rushed to buy, Xiao Haochen could only look at the meager amount of money in his hand and sigh inwardly.
When he returned home, his grandmother noticed his troubled expression and asked with concern, “Haochen, what’s wrong? Are you facing some difficulties?”
Xiao Haochen hesitated for a moment before softly saying, “Grandma, the teacher recommended a guidebook that would really help with my studies, but I…”
His grandmother gently stroked his head. “Don’t worry; Grandma will think of a way.”
The next day, she handed him a crumpled stack of money. “Child, take this to buy your book. Study hard.”
Xiao Haochen looked at his grandmother’s calloused hands, tears welling up in his eyes. “Grandma, you’ve worked so hard; this money…”
Grandma smiled and said, "It's alright, as long as you can study well, I'm willing to do anything for you."
In addition to the financial pressure, the doubts and ridicule from the outside world followed closely behind. At school, there were always some classmates who looked down on Xiao Haochen because of his family's circumstances. One day during gym class, a few students gathered to discuss their ideal universities when Xiao Haochen happened to pass by and overheard their conversation.
"My dad said that once I get into college, he'll take me abroad for a trip."
"I definitely want to go to a prestigious university. Someone like Xiao Haochen probably won't even make it through high school."
"Exactly, his family is so poor; it's already impressive that they can afford for him to go to school."
Hearing these words pierced Xiao Haochen's heart, but he didn't argue back. Instead, he buried these negative voices deep within himself and turned them into motivation to move forward. He studied even harder, often staying up late into the night. Under the dim light, his small figure hunched over the desk, writing and calculating tirelessly.
Time flew by, and the day of the college entrance examination drew closer. Xiao Haochen reviewed nervously every day. His efforts were not in vain; in practice exams, his scores improved each time. Finally, the day of the exam arrived, and Xiao Haochen confidently walked into the examination hall. Inside, he wrote fervently, pouring out years of accumulated knowledge.
After the exam ended, as he waited for the results, Xiao Haochen appeared calm on the outside but was anxious inside. Finally, on the day the results were announced, he arrived at school with a racing heart. When he saw that his score far exceeded the cutoff for top-tier universities, he was so excited that he couldn't find his words.
Returning home, Xiao Haochen tightly embraced Grandma: "Grandma, I got in! I got in!"
Tears sparkled in Grandma's eyes: "Good child, you did it! I knew you could!"
Not long after, an acceptance letter from a prestigious university arrived at their home. Xiao Haochen and Grandma sat in the yard, carefully opening the envelope. The golden letters on the letter shone brightly in the sunlight; at that moment, years of hard work and dedication finally paid off.
Grandma caressed the acceptance letter and said with emotion, "Haochen, if your Parents knew how successful you are now, they would be so proud."
Xiao Haochen looked at his grandmother and said firmly: "Grandma, this is all thanks to you. Without your support, I would not be able to get to where I am today. In the future, I will definitely be filial to you and let you live a good life." The breeze blew gently, and the leaves in the yard rustled, as if cheering for their joy. Xiao Haochen knew that this was just a new starting point in his life, and there would be more challenges waiting for him in the future, but he was not afraid, because he had a dream and the love of his grandmother as support.
