Xiao Haochen returned home, clutching the mysterious tome titled "Ancient Divine Physician's Record" as if it were a treasure. As soon as he stepped through the door, he eagerly shut it behind him and carefully placed the medical book on his old desk, which had borne witness to countless dreams.
His fingers gently brushed over the cover of the book, his eyes filled with awe and excitement. "From today onward, I will uncover your secrets," Xiao Haochen whispered, his voice imbued with an undeniable determination.
Opening the medical book, he was met with ancient and obscure characters that seemed to hold boundless wisdom. Xiao Haochen became completely absorbed in its pages, oblivious to the passage of time. As night fell, the dim light flickered in the gentle breeze, yet he remained focused on his studies, occasionally furrowing his brow in deep thought or nodding slightly in understanding.
"Haochen, it's time for dinner," came his grandmother's voice from outside, laced with warmth and concern.
"Grandma, you all eat first; I'm not hungry yet," Xiao Haochen replied without looking up, his mind entirely consumed by the medical book.
"This child, even when busy, must remember to eat," his grandmother sighed softly, her tone filled with helplessness but also understanding and support for her grandson.
After several days of relentless study, Xiao Haochen gradually grasped some of the intricate theories within the book. However, he knew that knowledge gained from reading alone was shallow; true understanding required practice. Thus, he decided to conduct simple treatment experiments on small animals.
On a sunny afternoon, Xiao Haochen brought a wounded wild rabbit he had rescued from the woods to a small shed in his backyard. With a focused expression, he carefully administered acupuncture to the rabbit according to the techniques described in the medical book. However, things did not go as smoothly as he had imagined. The rabbit struggled restlessly in his hands, and a wound that had previously stopped bleeding began to seep blood again.
"How could this happen? I followed the methods exactly as written," Xiao Haochen said, furrowing his brow in anxiety and confusion. He quickly flipped through the medical book again, meticulously comparing each step but could not find where he had gone wrong.
"Could it be my technique? Or is there an error in this medical book?" Xiao Haochen murmured to himself, feeling increasingly defeated.
At that moment, Grandpa Zhang from next door happened to pass by and noticed Xiao Haochen's troubled expression. Curiously, he asked, "Haochen, what's wrong? You look like you've run into some trouble."
Xiao Haochen looked up, a glimmer of hope flashing in his eyes as he recounted the situation to Grandpa Zhang in detail.
After listening, Grandpa Zhang pondered for a moment and said, “Child, the principles of medicine are all about flexible application. What’s written in books is static, but the ailments of the world are ever-changing. You can’t just follow the textbook; you must also consider the actual situation and think critically.”
Xiao Haochen nodded thoughtfully, “You’re right, Grandpa Zhang. I’ve been too eager for quick results.”
“Don’t be discouraged, child. When I was young, I also studied a bit of traditional Chinese medicine and understand some things. How about we figure it out together?” Grandpa Zhang encouraged as he patted Xiao Haochen on the shoulder.
“That would be wonderful, Grandpa Zhang! Thank you so much!” A smile returned to Xiao Haochen's face.
With Grandpa Zhang's help, Xiao Haochen carefully observed the wild rabbit's injuries and adjusted the acupuncture technique and dosage of medicine. After some effort, the rabbit's wound finally stopped bleeding, and its condition gradually stabilized.
“Great! We finally succeeded!” Xiao Haochen exclaimed excitedly, his eyes sparkling with joy.
“That’s the spirit, child. When you encounter problems in the future, think more and try more. I believe you will achieve great things in medicine,” Grandpa Zhang said with a reassuring smile.
“Yes, Grandpa Zhang, I will definitely do that,” Xiao Haochen replied firmly.
From that day on, Xiao Haochen worked even harder to study the medical book while also paying attention to various medical cases around him. He often consulted with the village’s old Chinese medicine doctor to continuously accumulate experience. Throughout this process, he gradually realized that the path of medicine is long and arduous, but each breakthrough strengthened his resolve to move forward.
