“Hey, isn’t this the Writer Jia? Why are you here alone with a child? Where’s your mother-in-law? Is she in the hospital from being heartbroken over your husband wanting to marry me?” Chu Qiao said sarcastically.
I ignored her and walked straight to the service counter.
At that moment, a familiar voice called out, “Wen Jing!” I turned around and was surprised to see Chen Hao.
“What are you doing here?” I asked in astonishment.
“I’m here to take care of some business,” Chen Hao replied with a smile, his gaze falling on my hands. “What’s this…”
“Divorce,” I answered calmly.
A flicker of concern crossed Chen Hao’s eyes as he turned to Zhang Cheng and Chu Qiao, his tone turning cold. “Zhang Cheng, long time no see.”
Zhang Cheng paused for a moment before his expression darkened. “Chen Hao, how could you be with her?”
Instead of answering him, Chen Hao turned back to me, his gaze gentle. “Wen Jing, marry me.”
I was taken aback and momentarily speechless.
Chen Hao pulled out a delicate ring box from his pocket, knelt down on one knee, and said earnestly, “Wen Jing, I love you. Marry me, and I will make you happy.”
I looked at the sincere man in front of me, a warm feeling surging in my heart. I took the ring and gently nodded, "I do."
Chen Hao stood up and placed the ring on my ring finger before pulling me into a tight embrace.
"Congratulations to you both!" The staff smiled as they handed us two marriage certificates.
Zhang Cheng and Chu Qiao were dumbfounded; they never expected that I would get married to another man on the very day of my divorce.
Holding the marriage certificate and linking arms with Chen Hao, I turned to leave the civil affairs bureau. The sunlight poured over us, and I felt an overwhelming sense of warmth and happiness.
Chen Hao turned his head, gazing at me tenderly, his eyes filled with affection. "Are you hungry? Let's go grab something to eat."
I nodded and leaned gently against his shoulder. Jiajia bounced along happily, glancing back at us from time to time, her face beaming with joy.
Chu Qiao stood at the entrance of the civil affairs bureau, her face pale with anger. She could hardly believe that I had rushed into marriage with Chen Hao.
She quickly approached us, her sharp voice breaking the momentary peace. "Chen Hao! Have you lost your mind? Marrying this second-hand goods!"
Chen Hao halted, his brow furrowed, a flicker of displeasure crossing his eyes. "Chu Qiao, please watch your words! Wen Jing is my wife, and I won't allow anyone to insult her."
He shielded me behind him, his tone firm and powerful.
"Wife? What gives you the right to marry her? Just because she has written a few lousy novels? Aren't you afraid she’ll cheat on you?" Chu Qiao pressed on, her voice growing increasingly harsh.
The staff passing by cast curious glances, whispering about Chu Qiao's behavior.
Chen Hao let out a cold laugh. "Chu Qiao, maybe you should take care of yourself first! I’m marrying Wen Jing because I love and admire her. As for your talk of infidelity, I think you have more experience in that area than I do."
His tone was mocking, his gaze sharp as it bore into Chu Qiao. Her face flushed with anger and embarrassment, her lips trembled but no words came out.
I gently tugged at Chen Hao's sleeve, signaling him to stop.
Taking a deep breath, Chen Hao turned to me and said softly, "Let's go." With that, he took my hand and led Jiajia away, leaving Chu Qiao standing there, shaking with rage.
Zhang Cheng stood nearby, watching us leave with a complex expression on his face.
Chu Qiao walked up to him, a hint of blame in her voice. "Look what you've done! If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have to endure this!"
Zhang Cheng waved his hand irritably. "Enough! Stop talking! Let's just go back!"
He strode ahead, ignoring Chu Qiao behind him. She stomped her foot in frustration, shot me a fierce glare, and then hurried to catch up.
