I instinctively took a step back, tightening my grip on Jiajia's hand.
Jiajia's small hand was icy cold, clutching mine tightly, her little face pale.
"Wen Jing, I beg you, for Jiajia's sake, lend me some money," Zhang Cheng's voice trembled with a hint of tears. "My company... it's about to go bankrupt, and Chu Qiao has left me... I'm really at my wit's end..."
I looked at him, feeling no stir of emotion within me, only deep-seated disgust.
His company going bankrupt? Chu Qiao leaving? What did that have to do with me?
When he abandoned Jiajia and me, did he ever consider our situation?
I took a deep breath, my tone icy. "Zhang Cheng, what does your company's bankruptcy have to do with me? When you abandoned us, did you ever think it would come to this?"
Zhang Cheng's face turned even paler. His lips trembled as he tried to say something more, but at that moment, Hong Meili walked over. Upon seeing Zhang Cheng kneeling on the ground, her expression darkened as she quickly stepped beside me, shielding me behind her.
"Zhang Cheng, how dare you come to plead with Wen Jing? Have you forgotten how you treated Wen Jing and Jiajia back then?" Hong Meili's voice was strong and laced with anger.
Seeing Hong Meili, Zhang Cheng's face grew even more ashen.
He lowered his head, unable to meet Hong Meili's gaze.
The air conditioning in the mall was strong, yet beads of sweat formed on Zhang Cheng's forehead.
"Mom... I... I know I was wrong..." Zhang Cheng's voice was weak, barely audible.
"You were wrong? Do you think a simple apology can make up for the harm you've caused to Wen Jing and Jiajia?" Hong Meili's voice was even harsher. "Do you think kneeling will earn Wen Jing's sympathy? Let me tell you, it won't!"
At that moment, Chen Hao walked over. Seeing the scene before him, his expression darkened as he quickly moved to stand beside me, shielding both me and Jiajia behind him.
"Zhang Cheng, what are you doing here?" Chen Hao's voice was low, carrying a hint of authority.
Zhang Cheng's face turned even paler at the sight of Chen Hao; his lips trembled as he struggled to find his words.
He managed to rise unsteadily from the ground, his eyes darting around, unable to meet Chen Hao's gaze.
The bright lights in the mall illuminated Zhang Cheng's face, making it look even more ghostly while revealing the panic and fear in his eyes.
"Chen Hao, I... I just wanted to ask Wen Jing for a loan..." Zhang Cheng's voice quivered, tinged with desperation.
Chen Hao let out a cold laugh. "A loan? I already know about your company's shoddy work. Do you really think you can turn things around?"
Upon hearing this, Zhang Cheng's face drained of color in an instant. He opened his mouth but couldn't utter a single word.
He staggered back a few steps, his eyes filled with despair.
"Wen Jing, let's go," Chen Hao said as he took my hand and turned to leave.
Jiajia clung tightly to my side, her small hand grasping the hem of my clothes.
I glanced back at Zhang Cheng; he remained rooted in place, like a statue, utterly still.
In the bustling mall, he seemed forgotten by the world, standing there all alone.
I turned my gaze away and followed Chen Hao out of the mall.
Sunlight streamed through the glass doors, warm and comforting.
I took a deep breath, feeling as if a heavy weight had finally lifted from my heart.
I looked over at Chen Hao, who was gazing down at Jiajia with a gentle expression.
We averted our eyes, no longer paying attention to the statue-like Zhang Cheng behind us, and continued to follow Chen Hao out of the mall.
A few days later, news broke about Zhang Cheng's company cutting corners, causing an uproar in public opinion.
