"Don't you want to see Nancheng get better?"
The analysis concluded.
"Is that all you have to say after such a long speech?"
"But you seem quite concerned about Nancheng!" Chen Yi said with a mischievous grin.
"Hey! We're brothers, so don't say such things!" Xu Dong replied, his face dark with embarrassment.
"Alright, alright! You're a good sport. I'll help you find someone better in the future." As he spoke, Chen Yi picked up a skewer of barbecue and started eating.
"Eat up! This is your treat after all."
Xu Dong looked at Chen Yi, who was devouring the barbecue across from him, and quickly joined in the feast.
"Not to say she's better than your sister, but at least she's better than your girlfriend, hahaha."
"Just think about it; if I knew someone like that, would you even have a chance?"
The two continued to eat while teasing each other.
Meanwhile, Xu Nancheng's family had finished their dinner. However, Xu Nancheng was troubled about sleeping arrangements. Since he and Lin Menghan had been away for so long, many items in their room had gathered dust—a common occurrence.
Despite this, his grandparents had tidied up the room nicely. However, since the house was originally small and didn't account for Xu Nancheng's family, there were only two bedrooms available.
Typically, his grandparents would sleep in one room while Xu Nancheng shared a room with Lin Menghan, separated by a piece of fabric that didn’t fully close off the space.
Xu Nancheng suggested that his grandparents sleep with him so that Lin Menghan could share a room with his grandmother. On the surface, this arrangement seemed reasonable. Lin Menghan nodded in agreement: "Yes! Yes!" Her eyes were filled with sincerity, clearly pleased with the plan.
However, his grandmother insisted that at her age she might have an old person’s smell and that sharing a room with Lin Menghan would surely bother her. Even though Lin Menghan said she didn’t mind, his grandmother remained adamant in her refusal.
In the end, his grandparents decided to sleep together in one room while Xu Nancheng had no choice but to share a room with Lin Menghan.
This meant they would be alone together in one room, which made Xu Nancheng feel somewhat conflicted since their relationship hadn’t yet developed to that level.
"Just pull the curtain across; that should do the trick."
"Then it's settled!"
Xu Nancheng slowly walked into the room and gently pressed the switch, the bright light instantly illuminating the entire space. He then approached the curtain, pulled it aside, and blocked off the view from the opposite side. Without hesitation, he walked toward his bed, as if everything were so natural and taken for granted.
His movements were smooth yet mechanical, devoid of any emotional fluctuations, which created an indescribable sense of strangeness. There was no expression on his face, as if his heart were calm and undisturbed; in reality, however, a storm was brewing within him.
Who could possibly understand this? They had only known each other for a day, yet they had become so intimate, like a couple. Not only that, but they were also going to live in the same room, which left him feeling utterly confused and uneasy. He didn’t know how to face this situation and could only hope that nothing would happen.
"Alright, Lin Menghan, you should rest. We’ll also take a break," his grandmother exchanged a few pleasantries with Lin Menghan.
Lin Menghan leisurely returned to her room. Glancing at the tightly drawn curtain, she couldn’t help but scoff. "I didn’t say anything as a girl, yet he’s acting all dramatic."
Xu Nancheng noticed her entrance and thought about how it could lead to hand-holding or hugging. He had to be cautious!
"Lin Menghan, don’t get carried away tonight! This is a notice, not a discussion," he warned.
Hearing this, she laughed lightly. "Who’s getting carried away?" She rolled her eyes dismissively and turned her head away.
"Nancheng, I’m turning off the lights!" she reminded him.
As the lights went out, her eyes were momentarily dazzled before adjusting to the darkness.
"Fine, just turn them off," he replied awkwardly.
But all of this was merely the calm before the storm.
Just as she lay down and took out her phone, Lin Menghan became curious about what Xu Nancheng was doing. She turned her head only to realize she couldn’t see him and reluctantly turned back.
At that moment, they could hear sounds coming from behind the curtain. Her eyes widened in surprise; she felt more awake now.
"No way! Is he really that studious? No textbooks or exams but still attending online classes?"
She frowned and called out, "Nancheng, what are you doing?"
How are you? Xu Nancheng finally tilted his head slightly after a while, clearly prioritizing his math over anything else.
She sighed and fell silent, realizing it was pointless to continue. It was like putting a warm face against a cold backside.
Time passed without her noticing, and finally, the sound of the online class stopped. The room fell quiet, leaving only the steady sound of Xu Nancheng's breathing.
After waiting for a moment, she called out, "Nancheng? Nancheng! Are you asleep?" Lin Menghan curiously glanced over a few times and asked.
There was no response; he had clearly fallen asleep.
A little while later, the noise from Lin Menghan also faded away. Then, there came the sound of rustling—Lin Menghan was getting out of bed!
She tiptoed to turn on the light and pulled back the curtains. Xu Nancheng lay there, and she couldn't help but grin.
"Hey, Nancheng, don't blame me. I'm just taking a quick look. I won't do anything crazy!" Lin Menghan murmured softly as she walked to Xu Nancheng's bedside and knelt down. Her face was very close to his.
Then she leaned in even closer.
With a soft peck, Lin Menghan pressed her lips against Xu Nancheng's forehead before quickly pulling back to a comfortable distance and lying down.
At that moment, her face felt slightly warm—she was so shy!
She admired Xu Nancheng's face. His complexion wasn't as dark as that of an athlete; instead, it was rosy and healthy. A hint of stubble graced his jawline, his nose was straight and prominent, and faint marks from wearing glasses were visible on his skin.
He looked just like a scholarly young man.
As she gazed at Xu Nancheng with a silly smile on her face, she began to feel her eyelids grow heavy. Perhaps it was just too tiring; before she knew it, her eyelids drooped, and she had fallen asleep.
