" Nancheng, it's really nothing!" Looking at the persistent Xu Nancheng, Chen Yi sighed. "Alright, Nancheng, it doesn't matter who is who among us brothers. I understand."
Xu Dong, standing nearby, quickly patted Xu Nancheng on the shoulder. " Nancheng! Yi Ge talked to me for half the day yesterday. I was too impulsive; I'm sorry!"
"Are you two done yet? You both made mistakes; just apologize and be done with it!" Chen Yi laughed heartily, slapping both of their shoulders.
After some back-and-forth, their relationships finally returned to normal.
"Alright, alright! Stop with the back-and-forth! Come eat some fruit!" Lin Menghan walked over with a plate of fresh fruit, unable to hold back her laughter at the sight of the three apologizing.
She placed the plate on the coffee table and hadn’t even sat down when Xu Nancheng quickly grabbed a piece of apple and smiled broadly at Lin Menghan. "Lin Menghan, this piece is for you." His face still wore that honest and simple smile.
Instantly, Lin Menghan's cheeks flushed red. "I can get it myself," she hurriedly replied, quickly taking the apple from him and letting out a sigh of relief. After all, being affectionate in front of the brothers made her feel quite shy.
However, Xu Nancheng seemed unfazed by her reaction and continued to offer her fruit. As a result, Lin Menghan shot him a fierce glare, which finally made Xu Nancheng sit down obediently, looking utterly wronged. "I just wanted to be really nice to her! What did I do wrong? So frustrating!"
"Hey, I feel like they’re not having any issues again?" Xu Dong observed as he watched the two exchanging glances.
"You think so too?" Chen Yi noticed it as well.
It seemed like Chen Yi and Xu Dong were thinking something similar as they turned to Xu Nancheng with unfriendly looks that made him uneasy.
But without any evidence, they couldn't say anything outright.
" Nancheng, there's one more thing. Our brave classmate is supposed to speak on stage when school starts; you know that, right?" Xu Dong brought up another topic.
"Yeah. Dad told me about it; the teacher mentioned it too."
"So that speech is up to you then," Xu Dong got straight to the point.
Xu Nancheng: ???
His heart raced as if he could already envision the scene of countless heads in the audience staring at him on speech day.
His mind felt dizzy, unable to form words.
"Forget it! I can't do it." He waved his hands repeatedly and even took a few steps back, panic written all over his face.
" Nancheng! Just go for it! It's not a big deal. Look at Dai Yan; he dares to do it. What are you afraid of?" Xu Dong continued to persuade him.
"That's him; I really can't do it!" Xu Nancheng's courage didn't rise but his voice certainly did.
At that moment, a figure silently approached Xu Nancheng and leaned close to his ear with a mischievous smile. "Hey, don't tell me you're worried that your sister won't like you?"
Xu Nancheng was momentarily taken aback by the voice, then turned to look beside him. There stood Chen Yi, his face close, wearing a teasing smile as he gazed at Xu.
Xu Nancheng fell silent, feeling as if he had been struck at a sensitive spot. The retort he had prepared got stuck in his throat because Chen Yi's words had hit the most vulnerable part of his heart. He found himself in a dilemma, unsure of what to choose. On one hand, he feared making a fool of himself during the speech; on the other hand, he worried that Lin Menghan would look down on him, thinking he was cowardly and would no longer want to be friends with him. This inner conflict tormented him deeply.
Supporting his chin with his hand, Xu Nancheng fell into contemplation. After a long while, he finally spoke slowly, "Alright, I'll go." It felt as if this single sentence had drained all his strength, yet it also brought a sense of relief.
His heart felt cold—truly cold. But why did it have to be him? Xu Nancheng was puzzled; surely they wouldn’t do this to him?
"It's nothing; just consider it compensation for hurting us," Chen Yi said. He wouldn’t throw his sister under the bus; that would only embarrass Lin Menghan.
"What? Why didn’t you say so earlier?"
"Well, even if I had, it wouldn’t have made a difference. It would just be his unwilling roar," Chen Yi replied.
"Wow, Chen Yi Ge, how did you convince him?" Lin Menghan's eyes sparkled with admiration as she clapped her hands in delight.
Chen Yi glanced at Xu Nancheng and smiled mysteriously. "It's a secret."
"What? You’re not going to tell me?" Lin Menghan exclaimed anxiously, nearly dancing with excitement.
Chen Yi didn’t want to reveal Xu Nancheng’s thoughts to Lin Menghan, but little did he know that his Nancheng had already backstabbed him early that morning.
Then Chen Yi looked at Xu Dong and said, "I’ll text you later."
"Come on, eat up!" Lin Menghan pouted and hurriedly urged them to change the subject.
The group leaned back on the sofa, munching on snacks and chatting comfortably.
"Sister, which high school are you going to attend?" Xu Dong asked curiously about Lin Menghan’s school. It wasn’t that he still held any fantasies about her; he was simply concerned.
Of course, Chen Yi asked the same question.
"At Ying Zhong Ban," Lin Menghan replied honestly.
"Oh? So you’re in the same class as us!" Xu Dong exclaimed in surprise, his eyes wide open. "That’s great! Their class is Special Class One!"
Special Class One was the best class at Ying Zhong, filled with top students from various backgrounds. While calling them 'gods' might be an exaggeration, they were certainly among the elite of Ying Cheng. The teachers were all elite figures within the school; some even held significant positions of power.
For instance, their homeroom teacher Guo Jianguo was the vice principal of the school.
"But isn’t school not even in session yet? How do you know your class?" Chen Yi pondered about this situation.
Ying Zhong knew that the decision regarding which class to attend would ultimately be made by the school. It wasn't as simple as just choosing a class based on personal preference.
Xu Nancheng made a gesture for silence, signaling that they should keep their voices down.
