Wei Yanwan followed the palace maid through the layers of the imperial palace, arriving at Changchun Palace. Inside the Empress's chamber, the scent of sandalwood wafted through the air. Empress Fucha sat gracefully on her phoenix chair, holding a string of prayer beads and turning them slowly. Upon seeing Wei Yanwan enter, she lifted her gaze slightly, revealing a gentle smile. "Wei, you have arrived."
"Your servant pays her respects to Your Majesty," Wei Yanwan replied respectfully, kneeling with her head bowed to conceal the chill in her eyes.
"Rise," the Empress said, putting down the prayer beads with a warm tone. "A few days ago, you saved His Majesty and were specially rewarded by him. I am also very pleased."
"Your servant does not dare take credit; protecting His Majesty is my duty," Wei Yanwan answered humbly, keeping her gaze lowered.
The Empress observed Wei Yanwan closely, a hint of scrutiny in her eyes. This maid seemed different from before. Wei Yanwan kept her head down, a barely perceptible cold smile tugging at her lips. The show was about to begin.
"I... I don't know!" The eunuch stammered in fear, shaking uncontrollably. "I check the storeroom every day on time, but this morning I found... the Jade Ruyi missing!"
The Queen scolded, "What are you all doing! You can't even guard the storeroom properly!" She turned to Wei Yanwan, her gaze sharp. "Wei, you are in charge of the storeroom. Explain this situation!"
Wei Yanwan quickly knelt down, feigning a look of panic and unease. "I... I don't know! I check the storeroom items carefully every day and have never noticed anything unusual."
