"Are you really not with manager Yu?"
"No!" I gritted my teeth and denied it again.
"Neither am I! So are we in the clear?"
Yao Hui revealed a long-lost smile. Since she was picked up by the wedding procession and taken to the hotel, she had been looking troubled. During the wedding games, she had blushed and cried several times out of embarrassment.
But I could sense a hint of suspicion behind that innocent smile. Wasn't I feeling the same way?
The house we bought in the city was still under renovation, so Yao Hui and I returned to our rented place near the company. After an unpleasant fallout with Ming Yuan and the others, it felt like a way to make amends with Yao Hui.
"We're never going back there..." Yao Hui shivered as she brought it up.
"We won't go back. Once the house is done, we'll bring my parents over to stay."
"Huh? Didn't you promise me that we'd enjoy some time alone together first?"
"My mother isn't in good health, and she's worried about us getting married." I looked at Yao Hui pleadingly. "I plan to let her come over for a few days of relaxation; once she's better, we can send her back."
"No way!" Yao Hui's voice suddenly became sharp. "I don't agree! If your mother comes to stay, then I'll call my mother over!"
"What nonsense are you talking about? How can a mother-in-law stay at her son-in-law's house?"
"What? Does marrying me mean I'm no longer part of my family? Just because it's your home, it doesn't mean it's not mine?"
Yao Hui had never been this unreasonable before. But when it came to our parents' well-being, I couldn't back down.
"What do you mean, Yao Hui? When did I say it's not your home? You know very well that my parents invested most of their life savings into buying that house for us. What reason do you have to keep them from staying?"
In a fit of anger, I spoke without thinking.
"So what? I’ve moved in; I’m the mistress of this house. I don’t want them disturbing my life!"
"What do you mean by your life? We’re married now; it’s our life, and both families are watching! It’s not like I’m forbidding your mother from coming over, but can we at least stagger the timing?"
Deep down, I didn’t want my mother to meet hers. The chaos they caused before the wedding still haunted me.
"My daughter Hui has been without a father since she was young; she’s my only child. You think you can just marry her off for one hundred fifty thousand? Not a chance!"
"How can you, as her mother, suddenly demand a higher bride price? You have a daughter—do you know what that means? In our place, daughters are considered a burden! If my son has taken a liking to her, that’s a blessing for your family!" My father slammed his hand on the table.
" Ma, keep your mouth shut…" My mother pulled at my father's arm, trying to mediate.
"In-Law, we only have this much money. If you really think it’s not enough, there’s nothing we can do. If it comes down to it, I can try to gather more, but the wedding must go on as scheduled. The hotel has been booked for a month now; we’ve arranged everything else."
Yao Hui and I were completely out of the loop in their conversation. Yao Hui just watched her mother make a scene, neither helping nor dissuading her.
In the end, I had to transfer the little savings I had set aside for our honeymoon to her mother to settle things. That money was meant to be a surprise for Yao Hui.
Afterward, Yao Hui comforted me, saying, "It's okay. If we lose money, we can earn it back together. Once my mother comes around, she might even give me some money. It won't delay our travels after we get married."
It sounded simple, but Yao Hui's salary was barely a fraction of mine. She was very obedient to her mother, only showing her rebellious side when she was with me. Yet, I found this authenticity of hers quite endearing.
