Liu Yuchuan was still working late, organizing the information for Mo Daowan. He wanted to gather evidence to strike against Wang Yang, and it was crucial to sort everything out clearly first. In their position, one couldn't trust just anyone, even if they were partners.
At that moment, Mo Daowan was also investigating the reason behind Liu Ru Yan's sudden disappearance. He had just confirmed their relationship when she went missing. It had taken him years to recognize her when his sister introduced them. Back then, he was still young and had gone abroad for work, where he happened to meet her while she was studying. She was responsible for welcoming him at the school, and that was when they became acquainted.
Mo Daowan had experienced his first feelings of infatuation at that age. He used to be a workaholic, always focused on his job, never imagining he would have a chance at love at first sight. It seemed like a cruel joke from fate when he met her. Initially, he didn't think it was love at first sight, but as they worked together, he realized how exceptional she truly was. Being with her made him slow down; she had a healing presence that drew him in, prompting him to pursue her. However, the pursuit wasn't smooth sailing; she had many admirers vying for her attention, and he felt like just another face in the crowd.
Later on, while abroad, he witnessed someone bullying her and stepped in to help—perhaps it was a cliché hero-saving-the-damsel-in-distress moment. She agreed to be with him, but that very night after they confirmed their relationship, she vanished along with his sister. He searched desperately for them but received no news.
Eventually, his sister reappeared, but he still hadn't learned anything about Liu Ru Yan. He was heartbroken and inadvertently discovered that Liu Ru Yan was the heir of the Liu Family. He realized he needed to become exceptional enough to be worthy of her. The Liu Family knew about his situation but had not allowed him to see her. For the past two years, he had been working hard to improve himself, striving to be the best among his peers.
Lan Ruo Yi brought Liu Ru Yan back into his life again, and he felt grateful for the collaboration with Liu Yuchuan back then; despite its complications, it had led him here. Yet now, being able to look at her like this felt insufficient.
"Where's your brother? I didn't see him at dinner tonight," Liu Ru Yan suddenly thought of Mo Daowan after realizing she hadn't seen him all afternoon.
"He left," Lan Ruo Yi replied thoughtfully; she had fallen asleep earlier that afternoon and probably didn't know Mo Daowan had left.
"He left? He doesn't care about you anymore?" It was understandable for Liu Ru Yan to think this way; he had come late at night only to leave now, leaving her feeling somewhat unsettled.
"What's wrong? Do you miss him?" Lan Ruo Yi raised an eyebrow at Liu Ru Yan, who appeared flustered and avoided eye contact.
Lan Ruo Yi's tone turned serious: "A Yan, while I think you two are a good match, we can't afford to think about that right now given our circumstances. What if we end up going back?"
Her words were like a cold splash of water extinguishing Liu Ru Yan's budding feelings: "You're right; don't worry." With that said, Liu Ru Yan closed her eyes. She didn't want anything serious with Mo Daowan; her life felt like a tangled mess—how could she possibly fall in love? Yet she couldn't deny the fluttering in her heart; he was just too gentle a person.
Lan Ruo Yi held Liu Ru Yan tightly in the darkness, as if they were sharing warmth and exchanging energy. She truly felt that Mo Daowan was quite remarkable; having such a handsome boyfriend made her heart flutter. Yet, their current situation felt precarious, like a clear target for an unseen attack, leaving her uncertain about when everything might vanish.
It reminded her of the time when the Cold Palace suddenly caught fire—there was no escaping it, and her powers had completely disappeared in that moment. What would love mean then? It would only hurt one person and add to another's troubles.
If they truly ended up together and both disappeared, would he tell his next girlfriend or wife about them? If he loved them, perhaps it would be another woman who would suffer from the fallout.
As dawn approached, she wondered if she would see the sunrise. It was uncertain.
"Good morning! Today is the first day that Kong Meng is managing us," she heard someone say.
"Good morning! But Kong Meng isn't really managing us," came the reply.
As Liu Ru Yan and Lan Ruo Yi entered the office, they overheard this conversation. It seemed to make sense to them.
"Do you really need management?" Lan Ruo Yi questioned. "Can't everyone just do their own work?"
"Oh, you don't understand. With a leader, you have to report your progress to show that you're actually working," Zhang Baofeng chimed in, his experience evident in his tone.
"Ah, so that's how it is! Zhang Baofeng, you're quite clever!" Tian Luo teased.
"Calling me clever sounds a bit harsh; it's just skills! Aren't you all doing the same?" Zhang Baofeng pretended to be upset but quickly shifted back to joking with Tian Luo, creating a lively atmosphere.
"Good morning, everyone!" Kong Meng greeted as he walked in, adding to the cheerful mood. Bai Juan winked at him playfully.
"Meng Jie," Zhang Baofeng said to Tian Luo, "wants you to manage him. What do you think?"
