Lan Ruo Yi and Liu Ru Yan were still lost in thought about what Kong Meng had just said, oblivious to Tian Luo's departure.
"Have you ever considered that Sister Na and the previous generation only had one day? What about us?" Lan Ruo Yi's words felt like a surge of blood rushing backward through her veins, as if something was holding them tightly, binding them to a predetermined path they could not escape.
"We will too, right? There's really no way we can survive, is there?" Liu Ru Yan seemed to be grappling with the same thoughts, her face betraying her agitation.
Juan noticed the expressions on their faces and a glimmer of understanding crossed her eyes. She crouched down and stealthily approached their workstations.
Zhang Baofeng observed this scene with a bemused expression; if he had to comment, it was more like she was sneaking around than anything else.
"Hey, what did Kong Meng say to you two?"
As they pondered how to respond, a ghostly voice suddenly whispered beside them, its owner trying to remain unnoticed by speaking in hushed tones.
"You scared me to death!" Liu Ru Yan slowly turned to see Juan half-crouching beside their desks, furtively glancing around as if afraid of being caught. Lan Ruo Yi quickly moved to position herself between them.
"What are you doing? Do you want to be discovered or not?" Lan Ruo Yi was confused; if she didn’t want to be seen, it was rather obvious, yet if she did want attention, it wasn’t so clear-cut.
"Of course I'm sneaking over! By the way, why did Meng Jie look for you two?" Juan settled into her hiding spot between their desks, now concealed from view.
Liu Ru Yan facepalmed in disbelief. How could someone pretend like this?
"It’s about our work situation. Ugh, don’t ask," Lan Ruo Yi feigned a look of having been reprimanded for poor performance. Liu Ru Yan glanced at her and silently lowered her head.
"Come on, don’t be like that. I won’t ask anymore." Juan looked at them and realized they must have been scolded. "Isn’t Kong Meng supposed to be hands-off?"
"What does that even mean? Does she say she doesn’t care but secretly brings people into the office to scold us?"
"Ah? I need to hurry back before I get caught for something!" Juan felt she had pieced everything together.
She shot them a grateful glance before sneaking back away.
Lan Ruo Yi and Liu Ru Yan exchanged puzzled looks. "What are you thanking us for?"
Zhang Baofeng watched as Juan stealthily returned and slowly moved his chair closer to her, his eyes glued to the screen to ensure no one noticed him.
He leaned closer and whispered, "What did you find out?"
At that moment, Zhang Baofeng also spoke in hushed tones. The office was eerily quiet; although their workstations were somewhat distant from each other, they could still clearly see each other's movements.
Just as Juan was about to speak, she noticed the curtains in Kong Meng's office had been drawn back. Kong Meng was watching them, and this realization made Juan push Zhang Baofeng away in alarm.
Zhang Baofeng understood the situation well and said nothing, continuing to watch the screen as if nothing had happened.
Kong Meng observed Juan's process of finding the two and their performance, a pleasant smile spreading across her face. She hoped they wouldn't let her down. Of course, she noticed Tian Luo's departure but didn't care much about it; that wasn't what mattered. What puzzled her was how Tian Luo had chat records. Could it be that he had secretly looked at her phone? This realization made Kong Meng's gaze become obscure and difficult to interpret.
With a swift motion, Kong Meng pulled up the curtains. Juan, who had been observing Kong Meng, let out a sigh of relief. Before she could fully relax, Zhang Baofeng quickly leaned in closer.
"What did you just say?" Zhang Baofeng was quite persistent.
Juan shot him a sideways glance. "Focus on your work; someone is always watching us!"
Zhang Baofeng understood the vague statement, his mind buzzing with confusion.
"Do you even know what you're saying?" he asked incredulously. Was it really something she could say? Could it be that those two had truly been warned?
As an experienced employee of the company, Zhang Baofeng felt he needed to be cautious with his words at all times.
"I know exactly what I'm doing, and you do too, right?" Juan replied, winking at Zhang Baofeng.
"Alright, alright," he conceded.
Meanwhile, Chen Chao took advantage of everyone's distraction to sneak out and spotted Tian Luo walking towards the door.
Tian Luo was tall and had a decent build; Chen Chao had harbored a crush on him for some time, but he always acted as if he didn't notice her at all.
Thinking this, she hurriedly caught up with Tian Luo and tapped him on the shoulder. Still lost in his earlier sadness, Tian Luo jumped slightly at the unexpected touch, mistaking it for Kong Meng approaching him.
Just as he was about to smile at her, Chen Chao's awkward expression made him quickly hide his own embarrassment. "What's wrong?" he asked.
Tian Luo maintained his gentlemanly demeanor; at least that's how Chen Chao always perceived him.
Seeing that Tian Luo was clearly upset yet still trying to greet her made Chen Chao's heart flutter with excitement.
"I noticed you seemed a bit down; can you tell me about it?" Chen Chao asked innocently, her eyes sparkling with concern as she looked at Tian Luo.
