"Come eat, stop overthinking," Liu Yuchuan said as he ruffled Liu Ru Yan's hair, his hand still damp from washing.
Liu Ru Yan looked up at him, her eyes sparkling as the water dripped onto her hair. "You just did that?" she asked incredulously. "No hesitation at all? If you don’t take your hand away, I’m going to get mad! I just washed my hair!"
She had just come back from the hospital, where the sterile scent clung to her. After arriving home late last night, she had to wash up thoroughly. And he just splashed water on her like that?
Seeing that Liu Ru Yan was serious and not joking around, Liu Yuchuan quickly withdrew his hand. Taking advantage of her not being truly angry yet, he grabbed a paper towel to dry his hands and headed toward the dining table in the living room.
Lan Ruo Yi and Mo Daowan had just sat down, with Lan Ruo Yi arranging the plates beautifully. The aunt had not disappointed the Liu family’s expectations; this meal was nutritious and healthy.
"Auntie, this is delicious! You should sit down and try some too!" Liu Ru Yan praised, initially thinking that a nutritious meal would be bland, but it turned out to be delightful. She couldn’t help but compliment it repeatedly, giving a thumbs-up to the aunt.
Even Mo Daowan, who wasn’t particularly fond of rich flavors, praised the meal highly. After finishing her compliments, Liu Ru Yan took a bite from Lan Ruo Yi's bowl.
The aunt noticed their happy expressions and felt a bit nervous but managed to keep her composure. "Oh dear, this is my duty; I won’t eat. My grandson is still waiting at home," she declined with a smile. Seeing them enjoy their meal brought her satisfaction.
"Then please wait a moment," Lan Ruo Yi said upon hearing her refusal and didn’t press further. She dashed from the dining table toward the kitchen, leaving the aunt slightly puzzled.
But she didn't leave; she just stood at the kitchen door watching.
Before long, Lan Ruo Yi began to pack some things for the aunt to take. They had bought some snacks earlier, meant for her grandson. The aunt looked a bit shy and blushed at the sight of the food. "No, no, Miss, you really shouldn't. This is what I should be doing." She had been working for the Liu Family since her son went to college. Over the years, she had watched the young lady grow up step by step, treating her as if she were her own child. She regretted that during this time, due to family matters, the young lady hadn't been able to eat well. She had heard that in just a week, the young lady had been hospitalized twice. So this time, she was determined to take good care of her.
Liu Ru Yan quickly put down her bowl and stood up, walking over to the aunt and linking her arm with hers. "Zhang Ayi, please take these. They’re not worth much; just consider it a gift for Xiao Xiao."
Zhang Ayi didn’t hesitate any longer; she took the snacks and bid farewell to everyone. After Zhang Ayi left, Mo Daowan exchanged glances with Liu Yuchuan. They looked at each other as they sat back down. "You two are quite fond of Zhang Ayi," Mo Daowan remarked.
Lan Ruo Yi smiled slightly. "Well, Zhang Ayi has taken such good care of A Yan; it’s only right."
"Exactly! If it weren't for Xiao Xiao being sick, Zhang Ayi would surely be very happy," Liu Ru Yan added while secretly exchanging a glance with Lan Ruo Yi, concealing the coldness in her eyes.
Mo Daowan and Liu Yuchuan could only share a glance without saying anything further. After finishing their meal, Liu Yuchuan and Mo Daowan cleared the table while Liu Ru Yan and Lan Ruo Yi headed to their room.
The two remembered that they could speak freely at home without holding back too much. "Do you think they believe us?"
They lay on the bed, holding their phones and looking at them.
In a quiet demeanor, no one would suspect that the two were communicating in their minds.
"I think we should believe it now; our performance was quite convincing, wasn't it?" Liu Ru Yan glanced at her own expression, ensuring there were no signs of their ruse.
"Why didn't you talk to Uncle this time?" Lan Ruo Yi found it strange; in the past, she would often unintentionally reveal bits of information to Liu Yuchuan.
"Is there something significant going on that you're keeping from him? Don't you think they've been unusually busy lately?"
Liu Ru Yan felt her illness was peculiar and didn't want her family to worry unnecessarily. She could tell how much they cared for her.
"Yes, they've been so busy lately. Have they announced anything?"
It seemed like they hadn't had a moment of leisure together recently. "Could it be because of Li Meng's departure?" Liu Ru Yan couldn't help but speculate.
Lan Ruo Yi nodded in agreement. "Now that you mention it, that does seem quite possible. If I think about it, they really started getting busy right after Li Meng left."
"But is it really just that?" Lan Ruo Yi wondered if this was something the two could handle alone. Who would have thought that Zhang Ayi would drug Liu Ru Yan?
During dinner earlier, Liu Ru Yan had confided in her about it. "If you're going to be so bold, you need to be prepared, don't you?"
Thinking of this made Liu Ru Yan's eyes fill with determination. "Yes, but why only drug you? And just a little bit at that."
Lan Ruo Yi pondered this gap in their understanding. Liu Ru Yan recalled that during her first fainting spell, she had noticed something was off with her sense of touch. This time, during dinner, it became even more apparent; as soon as she took the first bite, she sensed something was wrong.
He quickly tasted the food, realizing that only he had a problem. Everything felt like layers of fog, shrouding the small space in an unsettling atmosphere. He remained constantly alert for daggers and hidden arrows lurking in the corners.
