"Do you really believe that? Otherwise, how could you have ended up here instead of the Hyatt Hotel?"
"But they informed us it was here," Liu Ru Yan interjected, sharing her thoughts.
Lan Ruo Yi nodded in agreement. If their eyes weren't deceiving them, the messages in the group chat did indeed point to this location.
Kong Meng chuckled softly but remained silent.
Liu Ru Yan and Lan Ruo Yi exchanged anxious glances. Why wasn’t this person saying anything?
"Don't you want to know what happened back then?" Kong Meng finally spoke up, his tone still shrouded in mystery.
"What?" Lan Ruo Yi asked immediately, her mind racing. If you have something to say, then say it clearly. What does it mean to only say part of it?
"Do you know why you were abandoned?" Kong Meng's question made both women tense up even more.
"You know?" Liu Ru Yan's expression had turned icy. Kong Meng sensed that if she continued, Liu Ru Yan might lash out.
"So what if I do?"
"Of course I know," Kong Meng replied, no longer playing coy with them.
"You think your kindness is why the organization discarded you?" His words were laced with inquiry, as he could clearly see the doubt in Liu Ru Yan's eyes: Wasn't that the case?
"Look at you two, so naive. Think carefully—how many times have you defied the organization? How many times have you skipped events just because of your family connections?"
Kong Meng began to enumerate their transgressions one by one.
Liu Ru Yan stammered slightly, "We simply didn't understand the activities she proposed; that's why we didn't participate. It wasn't defiance!"
Lan Ruo Yi nodded in agreement.
Kong Meng's smile widened with amusement. "That is defiance! If you were leaders yourselves, would you allow two capable individuals you've nurtured to go against you?"
At this point, Liu Ru Yan and Lan Ruo Yi realized that their predicament wasn't due to any kindness on their part.
"So that incident was specifically designed as a trap for us," Liu Ru Yan stated matter-of-factly, without any hint of questioning or uncertainty.
Lan Ruo Yi turned to Kong Meng and asked, "How do you know about this?"
It was Wang Yang who brought this matter up at that time. Although Jiang Nan and the others had been dissatisfied for a long time, they hesitated to take action because they were both promoted by him and didn't want to make a move against him.
They knew all too well that the greater the ability, the greater the responsibility. With no one beneath them capable of matching their skills, they found themselves constantly facing rebuttals from those who didn’t work as hard. Human hearts can become unstable in such an environment. That’s why this action was directed specifically at the two of them.
Kong Meng spoke slowly, and her words were facts that both of them understood clearly. Seeing their expressions shift as they began to contemplate, she felt satisfied. “I have said all I need to say to you. If you don’t want more children to be harmed, I believe you have the capability to make a difference. I look forward to hearing from you!”
With that, she turned and left the room. At the door, they saw a familiar figure helping her carry her bag. It was Tian Luo. Liu Ru Yan recognized him immediately.
Speaking of which, Tian Luo hadn’t been around that day. When Lan Ruo Yi heard Liu Ru Yan mention Tian Luo, she recalled what had happened then.
Liu Ru Yan wanted to express something: just because he wasn’t present doesn’t mean he was unaware of the situation; let’s not forget he was involved in that matter from the start!
Lan Ruo Yi fell silent. Compared to Liu Ru Yan, she appeared more innocent, mainly because she felt that since Kong Meng had said this to them, Tian Luo shouldn’t be considered a completely bad person.
“I know.” Lan Ruo Yi realized she had just entered a dead end and was likely frightened by this situation. She didn’t want to go through it again.
“What did you say to my brother?” Lan Ruo Yi decided to put those thoughts aside and resumed her gossiping.
Liu Ru Yan sighed at her carefree nature and felt a bit envious. After regaining their memories, their personalities seemed completely transformed. It was clear that it stemmed from their experiences in ancient times.
As they exited the courtyard, they prepared to meet their families.
Liu Ru Yan spoke truthfully; her thoughts were simple—since Mo Daowan made her feel secure, she didn’t mind giving him a title.
“Tsk, I feel like you two have switched genders,” Lan Ruo Yi teased, noting how her brother acted like a little girl in front of Liu Ru Yan.
“Liu Ru Yan is just like my brother,” she added.
“We’re happy together! You will be too.”
Liu Ru Yan smiled lightly, unfazed by Lan Ruo Yi’s comments.
“At first, I didn’t want you two together; you kept sneaking around behind my back, and it made me a bit angry.”
Who would have thought that you two would end up as a couple?
Lan Ruo Yi felt a surge of anger as she recalled the past. At that time, she had desperately tried to prevent them from being together, fearing what might happen between them. She had wasted Liu Ru Yan's time, only to realize later that Liu Ru Yan was the one who had moved on and forgotten about her brother.
Looking back, it was somewhat amusing. She remembered how obediently she had listened to her advice; even during those moments of tension, they had never truly been together. Liu Ru Yan hadn’t been wrong in her assessment; at the time, she had been a bit confused and unaware of her own feelings. How could she have known she would be labeled as a "slut"? And yet, she had never actually been with him—she simply thought he was her ideal type.
