"Mom, do you not love me anymore?"
I laughed, "How could I not love you?"
My son began to accuse me, "If you loved me, you wouldn't just watch me without a place to live. Besides, what's wrong with me marrying Lin Jiao? You and Dad don't agree, but why won't you even buy me a house? Now you want to cut ties with me? Aren't you afraid of having no one to take care of you when you're old?"
I scoffed, "You went behind my back to get your marriage certificate, and now you're like this. How can I expect you to take care of me? Your aunt and I have enough money to adopt a good child; we don't need you."
With that, I hung up the phone.
The phone rang again; it was Lin Jiao calling.
Lin Jiao urgently accused me, "Didn't you say you agreed for me to be with Le An? Then why did you post that on social media about cutting ties with Le An? Do you know how embarrassing this is for me? How am I supposed to hold my head high in front of relatives and friends?"
I calmly replied, "I have already severed ties with Le An. From now on, if you have any issues, don't come looking for me. Also, I have plenty of money; I don't need a son to take care of me. I can easily hire a live-in nanny and donate my property for charity after I'm gone."
Lin Jiao was furious, "How can you do this? What about the family? No way, I won't agree."
I disdainfully retorted, "You won't agree? On what basis do you have the right to disagree? Who are you to me?"
Lin Jiao was left speechless by my rebuttal.
"I... I..."
I coldly snorted, "What about 'I'? If you're capable, earn your own money and stop trying to take advantage of others. Since you were able to get married behind my back, then you can buy your own house and plan your own wedding."
Before Lin Jiao could say anything else, my sister took the phone from me and hung up.
Lin Jiao called back more than a dozen times, but neither my sister nor I answered.
My sister sighed, "I wonder how Le An is doing now? Lin Jiao is petty and holds grudges; she will definitely take it out on Le An."
I snorted coldly, "Let her be; this is her choice, and she must face the consequences."
My sister expressed her concern, "What do you think Lin Jiao has besides being good-looking? I really can't understand why Le An insists on marrying her."
I sighed, "It's his fate; we can't do anything about it. We should just enjoy our lives now."
A month later, when my sister and I returned home, we saw my son sitting outside the community crying.
Before we went on vacation, I had changed the password for the house and informed the security guard to prevent him from bringing the the Lin Family in while we were away.
Seeing me return, he said pitifully, "Auntie, Mom, Lin Jiao said I'm useless and that she regrets marrying me. She said I can't do anything right; I can't even cook a meal properly. She said marrying me is like marrying a waste."
My sister frowned tightly, "How could she say that?"
Tears streamed down the son's face as he said, "I work during the day and when I come home at night, she still makes me do housework. His mother even makes me kneel on the floor to clean. My back hurts, and I can't get up. His mother scolds me for being a big man who's just being dramatic, and she even hits me."
Sister was furious and turned to confront Lin Jiao. "Don't stop me! I have to teach her a lesson today. How dare she bully Le An? Just watch, I’ll make her pay!"
The son stepped forward, wanting to throw himself into Sister's arms. In the past, whenever he felt wronged, he would always do this. Sister was also quite fond of this gesture.
